“I CAN’T BELIEVE SHE’S GONE” — HEARTBROKEN PARENTS MOURN 2-YEAR-OLD JULIA AFTER FATAL FIFTH-FLOOR FALL IN THE BRONX

A New York family is facing an unimaginable loss after their 2-year-old daughter died in a tragic fall from a fifth-floor apartment window in the Bronx.

Julia Wilcox-Polanco died on Tuesday night, November 3, 2026, after falling from her family’s apartment in the Mott Haven neighborhood. What should have been an ordinary evening at home turned into a tᩚraɢedy that has left her parents devastated and raised renewed concerns about window safety in homes with young children.

Now, her mother and father are speaking publicly about the little girl they loved so deeply, sharing the heartbreaking moments surrounding her final night and urging other parents to take extra precautions.

WHAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT?

According to police and reports from local news outlets, emergency services were called to an apartment building at 572 East 138th Street shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Investigators believe Julia was near a window fitted with a window-mounted air-conditioning unit when she managed to push aside the accordion-style plastic divider covering the space between the unit and the window frame.

The opening allowed the toddler to squeeze through. She then fell approximately five floors into an alleyway behind the building.

Emergency responders rushed Julia to Harlem Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The building’s superintendent, José Sosa, was among the people who reached the child after the fall. He later described the devastating experience of trying to help her.

“I hoped to do something but I couldn’t,” he said in an interview with ABC7.

The incident has left residents of the neighborhood deeply shaken.

HER MOTHER’S HEARTBREAKING ACCOUNT

Julia’s mother, Thessa Wilcox, has spoken about the moment she realized her daughter was no longer inside the room.

She explained that she had briefly stepped away and checked the baby monitor. When she noticed Julia was missing, she immediately rushed back.

“I saw on the monitor she wasn’t there and I went to run back and she was not — she was gone and she was out the window,” Wilcox recalled.

She said she could hardly believe what had happened.

After realizing Julia had fallen, her mother rushed downstairs and desperately tried to reach her daughter in the alley behind the building.

In the days following the tᩚraɢedy, Wilcox described being overwhelmed by grief.

“I’ve been too sad to leave my bed because I can’t believe it’s real,” she said through tears. “I can’t believe she’s gone.”

Her words reflect the devastating reality facing a mother who had expected to watch her little girl grow up.

A LONG-AWAITED CHILD WHO BROUGHT JOY TO HER FAMILY

Julia was especially precious to her parents.

According to their account to ABC7, the little girl came into their lives after a miscarriage and multiple attempts to have a child.

Her father, Chayanne Polanco, described the shock of receiving the news while he was heading home.

“I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a hoax. I thought it was someone else,” he recalled.

He was told to go to Harlem Hospital, where the family would face the heartbreaking reality of losing their daughter.

Her parents remembered Julia as energetic, lively and full of personality.

They had recently taken her trick-or-treating for the first time. It was a special family experience that they never imagined would become their first and last Halloween together.

Wilcox recalled watching people hand out candy and seeing how happy everyone was.

“I’m glad she got to see that. I’m glad she got to be there,” she said.

For her parents, those memories have now become precious moments they will carry with them forever.

THE WINDOW THAT DID NOT HAVE A SAFETY GUARD

As the family grieves, attention has turned to the window involved in the incident.

Julia’s parents told investigators and reporters that some of the windows in their apartment had window guards, but the particular window she fell through did not.

The opening was partially covered by an air-conditioning unit and accordion-style plastic side panels. However, these panels are designed to fill the gaps around an air conditioner — they are not safety barriers capable of preventing a child from falling.

The tᩚraɢedy highlights an important distinction that many families may overlook.

A window screen, plastic divider or air-conditioning panel should never be treated as a substitute for properly installed window guards.

Safety experts generally recommend that families with young children:

  • Install appropriate window guards or approved window-opening devices.
  • Keep beds, chairs and furniture away from windows.
  • Make sure window-mounted air-conditioning units are securely installed.
  • Check that gaps around air-conditioning units cannot be accessed by children.
  • Never leave a young child unattended near an open or accessible window.

Even a brief moment can be enough for a curious toddler to reach an opening that adults may not consider dangerous.

POLICE SAY NO CRIMINALITY IS SUSPECTED

The New York Police Department has said that investigators do not suspect criminality in connection with Julia’s fall.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being reviewed, but authorities have not announced criminal charges.

At this stage, the tᩚraɢedy is being treated as an accidental fall rather than a confirmed criminal act.

It is important not to draw conclusions about responsibility beyond what investigators have publicly established.

A MOTHER’S MESSAGE TO OTHER PARENTS

Amid her grief, Wilcox has asked other families to pay closer attention to child safety and to recognize how quickly an accident can happen.

“If there’s anything that I would like to say is please watch your children and bring awareness to better, safer child care,” she said.

She added a message that has resonated with many people following the story:

“Please hold your babies because one day they’re not going to be here.”

Her words are not only an expression of unimaginable grief but also a plea for other parents to take every possible precaution.

Julia’s dєatᩚh has left a family mourning a future that will never come — the birthdays, first days of school, holidays and countless ordinary moments they had hoped to share with her.

For her parents, the memories of their little girl will remain.

And for other families, this heartbreaking tᩚraɢedy is a reminder that window safety is not a detail to overlook. Proper protection, secure installations and keeping children away from accessible openings can make a ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal difference.

A little girl who had only just begun discovering the world is now being remembered by the people who loved her most.
