Zoo Miami Worker Rushed to Hospital After Handling Drugged Antelope as Officials Investigate Possible Opioid Exposure

A routine veterinary procedure at one of Florida’s largest zoos took an alarming turn when an employee suddenly became ill while handling an antelope that had been sedated with a powerful opioid.

The incident happened at Zoo Miami on Friday, November 6, as staff prepared a greater kudu antelope for transfer to another facility.

According to the zoo, the employee began experiencing symptoms while helping secure the animal’s head after it had been immobilized. A veterinarian was carrying out medical tests required before the antelope could be transported.

The animal had been given medication that included thiafentanil, a highly potent opioid used by veterinarians to immobilize large animals.

Zoo officials became concerned that the employee might have accidentally come into contact with the drug through the antelope’s saliva.

Although the exact cause of the worker’s symptoms has not been established, the zoo treated the situation as a possible exposure emergency.

The employee was administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid exposure, before being transported to Jackson South Medical Center for further evaluation and observation.

Fortunately, the zoo later confirmed that the staff member was in stable condition and remained under medical supervision.

The employee’s identity has not been released.

Thiafentanil is a powerful veterinary immobilizing drug that is not intended for human use. Its potential effects on people can include dizziness, nausea, breathing difficulties and dangerously low blood pressure. Severe exposure can become life-threatening.

Safety guidance for handling the medication calls for protective equipment and careful procedures to reduce the risk of accidental contact.

The incident has raised questions about the risks faced by zoo employees who work closely with animals undergoing medical treatment. Even a procedure routinely performed by experienced veterinary teams can involve dangerous substances that require strict precautions.

Zoo Miami emphasized that the cause of the employee’s illness had not been confirmed. Officials said the possible contact with the animal’s saliva was being treated as a precautionary concern rather than an established explanation.

The zoo continued monitoring the situation and said further information would be shared when appropriate.

For now, the most reassuring detail is that the hospitalized employee was reported to be stable following the frightening incident.
