MADELEINE McCANN MYSTERY: INVESTIGATOR WHO REFUSES TO GIVE UP MAKES EMOTIONAL NEW APPEAL NEARLY 20 YEARS AFTER THE LITTLE GIRL VANISHED — “AS LONG AS I HAVE HOPE, I WON’T STOP LOOKING”
Nearly two decades have passed since three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared during a family holiday in Portugal. Yet one man who has spent years searching for answers says he has no intention of walking away from the case.
Julian Peribañez, the Spanish private investigator who was hired by Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, in 2008, has issued a renewed appeal for information that could finally help explain what happened to the missing little girl.
In a recent interview with The Olive Press, Peribañez opened up about the investigation that changed his life, shared his personal theory about Madeleine’s disappearance and explained why he continues pursuing leads nearly 20 years later.
His message was both emotional and determined.
“I don’t know if she’s alive or not, because hardly anyone on Earth does,” he said.
“But as long as I have hope, I won’t stop looking.”
For the families and people who have followed the case since 2007, those words bring renewed attention to a mystery that remains unresolved.
THE NIGHT A THREE-YEAR-OLD GIRL DISAPPEARED
Madeleine McCann vanished on May 3, 2007, while on a family holiday in Praia da Luz, a seaside resort in Portugal’s Algarve region.
She was just three years old.
Her parents had been dining with friends at a restaurant near their holiday apartment while Madeleine and her younger twin siblings were sleeping inside.
During the evening, the adults took turns checking on the children.
But when Kate McCann went to check on Madeleine, she discovered that her daughter was missing.
The bedroom window and shutters became important elements of the early investigation.
An enormous search operation followed, attracting international media attention and generating thousands of potential leads.
Photographs of Madeleine, particularly the distinctive mark in her right eye, were circulated around the world.
Her disappearance became one of the most widely publicized missing-child cases in modern history.
But despite years of investigations across several countries, her fate has never been established.
THE INVESTIGATOR WHO HAS SPENT ALMOST TWO DECADES SEARCHING
In 2008, approximately one year after Madeleine disappeared, her parents hired a private investigation team to pursue additional leads.
Julian Peribañez became involved in that effort.
For him, the case eventually became much more than a professional assignment.
Over the years, he continued following leads and examining information that he believed could help uncover what happened to Madeleine.
His involvement also influenced the direction of his personal and professional life.
In an exclusive interview with The Olive Press published on October 25, 2026, Peribañez reflected on how the investigation shaped his commitment to protecting vulnerable children.
He explained that his work on Madeleine’s case inspired him to examine wider issues involving child exploitation and institutional failures.
Last year, he published a book titled Stolen Innocence: The Price of Power, exploring major child exploitation scandals, including the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and Spain’s notorious Alcàsser case.
Explaining the connection between the book and Madeleine’s disappearance, he said:
“This book came from Maddie. Her story is not in it, but it all stemmed from my search for her.”
HIS THEORY POINTS TO AN EASTERN EUROPEAN TRAFFICKING NETWORK
One of the most striking parts of Peribañez’s latest interview concerns his personal theory about what may have happened to Madeleine.
He believes she could have been abducted by an organised Eastern European trafficking network operating in the Algarve region.
He has continued pursuing his own lines of inquiry and is particularly interested in identifying individuals who may have had relevant connections or encounters in the area around the time Madeleine disappeared.
He is now appealing directly to people who lived, worked or spent time in Portugal’s Algarve region.
He believes that even one overlooked name or seemingly insignificant detail could provide a new direction for his investigation.
“If you’ve had encounters with people who fit the profile, please reach out,” he urged.
“All I need is a name. Give me a name, and I’ll chase it wherever I have to.”
However, there is an important distinction: this is Peribañez’s personal investigative theory. It has not been confirmed by Portuguese, British or German police, and no publicly established evidence has demonstrated that an Eastern European trafficking network was responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance.
THE OTHER SUSPECT AT THE CENTRE OF THE OFFICIAL INVESTIGATION
While Peribañez continues pursuing his own theory, German authorities have separately focused on Christian Brückner, a convicted German 𝘴єx offender.
He was publicly identified as a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance in 2020.
German prosecutors have previously stated that they believe Madeleine is dead, although her body has never been found.
Brückner has not been charged in connection with her disappearance and denies involvement.
His identification as a suspect brought renewed attention to the investigation, but it has not produced a definitive answer about what happened to Madeleine.
The difference between the official investigative direction and Peribañez’s personal theory highlights how many unanswered questions still surround the case.
For now, neither has delivered a publicly confirmed resolution.
HOW MADELEINE’S DISAPPEARANCE CHANGED HIS LIFE
Peribañez’s work has gradually expanded beyond the search for one missing child.
In 2024, he founded Guardianes de la Inocencia, an organisation dedicated to protecting vulnerable children and exposing child exploitation.
The organisation works with police forces internationally on child-protection issues.
He has also used his writing and public appearances to raise awareness of cases involving 𝘢bu𝘴e, exploitation and institutional failures.
According to Peribañez, the inspiration for this wider mission came directly from his involvement in the Madeleine investigation.
Although his professional work now covers a broader range of issues, he has made it clear that the search for Madeleine remains unfinished.
He believes vulnerable children deserve protection regardless of their background, circumstances or the influence of those who may be responsible for harming them.
“AS LONG AS I HAVE HOPE, I WON’T STOP LOOKING”
Perhaps the most emotional part of the interview was Peribañez’s acknowledgment that he still cannot say whether Madeleine is alive.
After almost 20 years, there is no confirmed account of what happened to the little girl after she disappeared from the holiday apartment.
He has not claimed to have discovered a breakthrough or definitive new evidence.
Instead, his latest appeal is built around the possibility that someone may still hold information that has never reached investigators.
For him, one name could be enough to justify another investigation, another journey and another attempt to find answers.
His determination reflects the reality that time passing does not automatically bring closure to families dealing with unresolved disappearances.
Madeleine’s parents have continued to appeal for information and have repeatedly expressed their gratitude to those who have supported the search.
Their official website continues to provide updates and encourages anyone with relevant information to contact the appropriate authorities.
NEARLY 20 YEARS LATER, THE SEARCH CONTINUES
Madeleine would be 23 years old in 2026.
The little girl whose photograph once appeared on television screens and newspaper front pages around the world would now be a young adult.
Yet for her family, she remains the child who disappeared during a holiday that should have been filled with happy memories.
For Julian Peribañez, the investigation has become a lifelong commitment.
His latest appeal does not solve the mystery, but it demonstrates that he remains determined to pursue information that could help establish the truth.
And while his theory about a possible trafficking network remains unverified, he hopes someone in the Algarve region may finally come forward with information that matters.
Almost two decades after Madeleine vanished, the questions remain.
Where is Madeleine McCann?
What happened during those crucial hours in May 2007?
And could someone still hold the missing piece
