Chilling 911 Calls Capture Screams as Florida Mother Loses Arm in Brutal Alligator Attack

Horrifying 911 recordings have revealed the desperate moments after a 58-year-old mother was attacked by an alligator during a family outing on Florida’s Silver River, leaving her with life-changing injuries.

Dina Rae Spann was enjoying a day on the water in Marion County on August 8, 2026, when a large alligator suddenly lunged toward her and clamped down on her arm.

The terrifying aftermath was captured in two emergency calls released months after the incident.

“Somebody got bit by an alligator. I think her arm got bit. It’s dangling off,” one female caller told the 911 operator.

As the dispatcher tried to understand the severity of the injuries, the caller responded with an even more devastating description.

“She lost half an arm. We need help. Can you guys get here?”

Screams and frantic voices could be heard in the background as witnesses struggled to get Spann out of the water and onto a nearby boat.

In a second call, a man told the operator that the group was on the Silver River. A woman could be heard crying before he delivered three chilling words:

“Her arm is gone.”

Mother fought back against the alligator

Spann’s son, Zach Guerrina, later revealed that his mother had fought desperately to protect herself during the attack.

According to him, she tried to hold the animal’s mouth shut while struggling to reach the surface for air. She also lost part of her left ring finger before the alligator clamped down on her right forearm.

Her son said she was determined to stop the predator from reaching her legs.

Nearby boater John Gamache witnessed the terrifying scene and rushed to help.

He recalled seeing the alligator moving at high speed toward a group of swimmers. By the time he reached them, the water was filled with blood and several people were panicking.

Gamache and his father helped pull the injured woman and other people from the water. They used a rope and part of Spann’s clothing to create a makeshift tourniquet and control the bleeding before rushing her toward emergency responders.

“It was a terrible injury, bones poking out, blood everywhere,” Gamache recalled.

He said every minute mattered.

Alligator captured after the attack

Spann was rushed to the hospital, where doctors had to amputate her right arm below the elbow. She also lost part of her left ring finger.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission located and removed a 9-foot, 8-inch alligator from the river the following day.

The Silver River was temporarily closed while authorities searched for the animal but reopened after the removal.

A survivor determined to move forward

Despite the devastating injuries, Spann has shown remarkable determination throughout her recovery.

In September, she shared a video documenting her healing process and spoke about learning to adapt to life after the amputation.

“Recovery isn’t always pretty, but I’m learning to laugh through the hard parts and celebrate every little victory,” she wrote.

She also shared a powerful message that has since resonated with many people following her story:

“The gator got a piece of me. It didn’t get the best of me.”

The newly released emergency recordings offer a chilling glimpse into the panic and desperation surrounding the attack. But for Spann and her family, the story is also one of survival, courage and the extraordinary efforts of strangers who rushed to help when every second counted.
