Maryland Teen, 18, Vanishes After Taking Small Boat Onto River as Rescuers Discover Terrifying Scene

An extensive search is underway in Maryland after an 18-year-old disappeared while out on a small fishing boat, leaving his family desperately waiting for answers after rescuers discovered his vessel overturned in the river.
Mark Everett Coates III, from Havre de Grace, was last seen on Wednesday, November 4, after launching his 10-foot aluminum boat from the Water Street Boat Ramp at around 5 p.m.
The teenager was believed to be operating the boat near the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge over the Susquehanna River.
But when authorities discovered his boat capsized near Garrett Island the following morning, Coates was nowhere to be found.
Boat Found Overturned Without Its Young Owner
Maryland Natural Resources Police responded on Thursday morning after receiving a report of a small aluminum jon boat floating upside down near Garrett Island.
Investigators identified the vessel as belonging to Coates and immediately launched a search for the missing teenager.
He was last seen wearing a bright chartreuse long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans.
The discovery sparked a large-scale emergency response involving Maryland Natural Resources Police, the US Coast Guard, Harford County emergency services, the sheriff’s office, the Susquehanna Hose Company and Chesapeake Search Dogs.
Search teams deployed divers, boats, search dogs and aircraft in an effort to locate him.
Dangerous Weather Complicates Search
The search has been made more difficult by challenging weather conditions along the Susquehanna River.
Strong winds and changing conditions initially limited the availability of aviation resources and made it dangerous for ordinary boats to enter parts of the search area.
Crews were able to conduct aerial searches during brief periods of more favorable weather, while rescue teams continued working on the water.
By Saturday, November 7, the search had entered its third day. Maryland Natural Resources Police said high winds continued to create unsafe conditions for vessels other than those operated by emergency responders.
Authorities urged recreational boaters to stay away from the search area so rescue crews could work safely.
Mother Describes Her Son’s Love of the Water
Coates’ disappearance has devastated his family and shaken the local community.
His mother described him as an avid fisherman who loved spending his days on the water, chasing sunrises and sunsets.
Residents who live near the river have watched emergency crews searching for the teenager, with some local boaters also joining the effort.
One nearby resident told CBS Baltimore that the disappearance had affected the entire community, even those who did not personally know the family.
Another local boater said the incident was a reminder of how quickly conditions on the water can change, particularly when strong winds and shifting weather arrive.
Authorities Make Urgent Appeal for Information
Investigators have not publicly established what caused the boat to capsize or exactly what happened to Coates after he was last seen.
Maryland Natural Resources Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed his boat on the river or noticed unusual activity near Garrett Island to come forward.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Maryland Natural Resources Police at 410-260-8888.
For Coates’ family, every passing hour brings more uncertainty. Their 18-year-old son went out on the water as he had done before, but this time his boat returned without him.

As rescue teams continue searching through difficult conditions, his loved ones are holding on to hope for answers.
