What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) is a drama film directed by Lasse Hallström and based on the novel by Peter Hedges. The story follows Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp), a young man living in the small town of Endora, Iowa, where he struggles to care for his family while longing for personal freedom.

Gilbert’s life revolves around his mentally challenged younger brother, Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio), and their morbidly obese mother, Bonnie (Darlene Cates), who has been housebound for years. Gilbert also has two sisters, Ellen and Amy, who help with the household, but much of the burden falls on him. He works at a small grocery store and has an affair with a married woman, Betty Carver (Mary Steenburgen), but feels trapped in his mundane existence.

Everything changes when Becky (Juliette Lewis), a free-spirited young woman, arrives in town with her grandmother after their camper breaks down. Becky and Gilbert develop a connection, and she encourages him to see a life beyond his responsibilities. Meanwhile, Gilbert struggles with his emotions, sometimes resenting his family’s dependence on him. One night, in frustration, he hits Arnie, which devastates him. Seeking redemption, he reconciles with his brother and begins to assert himself.

Tragedy strikes when Bonnie dies suddenly in her bed. Knowing that removing her body would be a humiliating spectacle, Gilbert and his siblings burn the house down, symbolizing a fresh start. The film ends with Gilbert and Arnie leaving town with Becky, suggesting a hopeful new chapter.

The movie is a poignant exploration of family duty, personal sacrifice, and the longing for freedom, with standout performances, particularly from DiCaprio, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Arnie.
