The Last Thing Mary Saw (2021)
In the spring of 1840, a family gathers in their old, isolated farm house to mourn the loss of their matriarch. As the mourning proceeds, the circumstances of the matriarch’s death come into question.
Fan Review: Based on the early reviews, I braced myself for a tedious cinematic experience. Instead, I was treated to a beautifully performed film boasting a compelling narrative, impressive production design, striking cinematography, and a seamlessly integrated, atmospheric soundtrack.
The story captivated me from start to finish, and the entire cast delivered truly exceptional performances – a remarkable achievement in any genre. While not overtly frightening, the unsettling presence of the matriarch sent shivers down my spine with each appearance.
My enjoyment was slightly diminished by the familiar trope of religious intolerance and what felt like the inclusion of gay characters for the sake of appealing to current trends. However, these aspects aside, I thoroughly appreciated the film. It seems many filmmakers aspire to the atmospheric horror achieved by The Witch, and this movie comes remarkably close.
Despite my positive experience, I acknowledge the validity of dissenting opinions, and potential viewers should consider them. This is undoubtedly a film that will elicit strong reactions, leaving little room for lukewarm responses.
