“THE OCEAN WAS HER HAPPY PLACE” — BELOVED SWIMMER, 65, diᩚєs IN SHARK ATTACK OFF SOUTH AFRICAN BEACH
Janine Lochrenberg had spent years finding joy in the sea.

But during a morning swim with fellow open-water swimmers, the 65-year-old lost her life in a devastating shark encounter that has left her community heartbroken.

For Janine Lochrenberg, the ocean was more than a place to swim.

It was where she found happiness, friendship and a sense of freedom.

The 65-year-old was taking part in a morning swim with a group off Orient Beach in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London, on South Africa’s southeastern coast, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Then, shortly after 7 a.m. local time, the peaceful outing turned into a desperate emergency.

Janine signalled that she was in trouble.

Fellow swimmers realised she had been bitten by a shark and rushed to bring her back to shore.

Despite their efforts, she could not be saved.

She was pronounced dead on the beach.

Her sudden dєatᩚh has devastated the local open-water swimming community, where friends are now remembering not the circumstances of her final swim, but the warmth and kindness she brought into their lives.
“THE OCEAN WAS JANINE’S HAPPY PLACE”
Following the tᩚraɢedy, the East London Open Water Swimming community shared an emotional tribute to their friend.

The group described Janine as someone who never sought the spotlight, preferring instead to quietly enjoy the activity she loved.

They remembered her “beautiful smile” and “gentle kindness,” as well as the meaningful presence she brought to their swimming community.

For Janine, swimming was not simply a hobby.

It was part of her life and an opportunity to share special moments with others who loved the water as much as she did.

Friends also recalled swimming adventures together at the sea, Gubu Dam and rivers, memories that have now taken on an especially painful significance.

One friend described her as exceptionally intelligent and talented, but said it was her kindness and the way she listened to others that made her so special.

Another said they were heartbroken by her passing and would cherish the memories they had made together.

A MORNING SWIM TURNS INTO A DESPERATE RESCUE
Witnesses told South African broadcaster SABC that Janine was swimming with a group when she indicated she needed help.

Fellow swimmers quickly recognised the seriousness of the situation and brought her to shore.

A medic who was among the group attempted to help, but Janine was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed they had been called to Orient Beach and found a woman’s body with open wounds.

An inquest was opened into her dєatᩚh.

The shark species involved had not been officially identified in the initial reports.

The incident has also prompted renewed attention to safety along South Africa’s coastline, where shark encounters are uncommon but can have devastating consequences.

BEACHES CLOSED FOLLOWING THE tᩚraɢedy
Following the attack, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality closed Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach until further notice.

Authorities urged the public to stay out of the affected waters and to follow safety instructions at other local beaches.

The closures were introduced as a precaution while officials responded to the incident and assessed the situation.

For the people who knew Janine, however, the news was about much more than beach safety.

A familiar face who had shared countless mornings in the water with friends would no longer be joining them.

A LIFE REMEMBERED FOR KINDNESS
Reports described Janine as a recently retired nuclear radiographer and a musician, with a passion for swimming and a close connection to her community.

Her interests brought her into contact with people from different walks of life, but the tributes following her dєatᩚh repeatedly returned to the same qualities: her intelligence, her gentle manner and the kindness she showed others.

Those who knew her are now left with memories of shared swims, conversations and adventures.

The ocean she loved has become the setting of a loss that her friends and fellow swimmers are struggling to comprehend.
“YOU WILL ALWAYS BE PART OF OUR OCEAN FAMILY”
Janine’s dєatᩚh is a painful reminder of how quickly an ordinary morning can change.

Yet the tributes shared in her memory have focused on the life she lived rather than allowing the tᩚraɢedy to define her entirely.

Her friends have spoken of the joy she found in the water and the friendships she built through swimming.

They have also made clear how deeply she will be missed.

Janine Lochrenberg was 65, and the ocean had been one of her greatest sources of happiness.

She leaves behind a community grieving a much-loved friend — someone remembered for her gentle kindness, her beautiful smile and the quiet warmth she brought to every shared adventure.
