“YES, TWO BROTHERS” — RUTE CARDOSO’S HEARTBREAKING ACCOUNT OF THE NIGHT SHE LEARNED DIOGO JOTA WAS GONE

She was waiting for her husband to read her message when a phone call changed everything. Just 11 days after their wedding, Rute Cardoso was forced to confront the unimaginable loss of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva.

For Rute Cardoso, the night began with an ordinary expectation: her husband would eventually read her messages and call when he stopped travelling.

Instead, she found herself pacing through the night, desperately contacting hotels, hospitals and police as her fears grew.

Then came the words she would never forget.

“Yes, two brothers.”

Rute heard the sentence while her uncle spoke to Spanish traffic police from another phone. At first, she struggled to understand what it meant. Moments later, she heard him explain that the bodies were being taken away.

Her husband, Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, and his brother André Silva had died in a car 𝔠r𝘢sh in Spain.

The tᩚraɢedy occurred on July 3, 2025, just 11 days after Diogo and Rute had married. Now, Rute’s account of those devastating hours has been shared in the biography Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts, offering a deeply personal glimpse into the night that changed her family forever.

Before the journey, Rute had exchanged messages with Diogo as he and André travelled towards Spain.

Her husband had replied to an earlier message with an emoji, and she reminded him to keep his eyes on the road.

It was the last message he answered that day.

Later, Rute wanted to share a video connected to the surprise wedding dance she and her bridesmaids had prepared. She sent Diogo a message asking him to call when he stopped because she had something she wanted him to see.

The message was delivered, but it remained unread.

At first, Rute had no reason to imagine that anything terrible had happened. Diogo was travelling, and she expected to hear from him when he had a chance.

But as time passed, the lack of communication became increasingly unsettling.

Her subsequent messages were not reaching him, and her attempts to call brought no reassurance.

The uncertainty became unbearable. Rute began trying to establish whether the brothers had arrived at the hotel where they planned to stop in Benavente, Spain.

When the hotel confirmed that they had not checked in, her anxiety deepened.

She contacted hospitals and attempted to reach the Spanish police, searching for any information that might explain why neither man was responding.

There was still no clear answer.

As Rute continued searching for information, her sister suggested contacting their uncle, Vítor, a lorry driver who could call Spanish traffic police using a Spanish telephone number.

Rute remained connected while he made the call.

She could hear parts of the conversation taking place on the other phone.

Then came the words: “Yes, two brothers.”

Rute later explained that she and her sister were confused by the phrase. How did the police know that the two men were brothers?

The meaning became painfully clear as the conversation continued.

She heard her uncle tell her brother-in-law that the bodies were being taken away, possibly to the mortuary.

In that moment, Rute said, her mind went blank.

The possibility she had been desperately trying to avoid was becoming reality.

She immediately began contacting family members, including Diogo’s father and André’s girlfriend, Paula, asking them to come over.

Even then, she struggled to accept what she was hearing.

“THIS IS A JOKE. IT CAN’T BE TRUE.”

Spanish police officers later formally confirmed the deaths to the family. Two psychologists also arrived to provide support during the devastating ordeal.

But official confirmation could not make the news feel real.

Rute recalled repeatedly telling her friend Catarina that the situation could not possibly be true.

“This is a joke, it can’t be true. There’s no way in the world this can be true!” she said.

Her sister stayed close to her, trying to help her begin to understand what had happened.

Rute later described walking approximately 11 kilometres around the yard at her sister’s home that night, unable to settle as she tried to process the news.

The physical movement reflected a mind struggling to comprehend an unimaginable loss.

Only days earlier, she and Diogo had celebrated their wedding. They had shared plans, memories and the excitement of beginning their married life together.

Now, the future they had expected to share had been taken away.

THE JOURNEY TO KILOMETRE 64

When it came time to travel to the mortuary, Rute asked the driver to follow the same route that Diogo and André had taken.

She wanted to know where the 𝔠r𝘢sh had happened.

She imagined that, by the time she reached the location, the wreckage might already have been removed.

But when the vehicle reached kilometre 64, the remains of the Lamborghini were still there.

The sight was devastating.

Rute tried to get out of the vehicle and move towards the wreckage, but an officer stopped her, attempting to protect her from the traumatic scene.

It was another painful moment in a night filled with experiences she could scarcely process.

The journey had begun as a search for answers. Now, she was confronting the physical aftermath of the 𝔠r𝘢sh that had taken her husband’s life.

THE WATCH, WALLET AND WEDDING RING

At the mortuary, Rute asked to see Diogo directly.

According to her account, officials did not permit her to view his body in the way she had requested. Instead, she was shown his form on a stretcher through a small window.

She was later given back his personal belongings, including his watch, wallet and wedding ring.

The objects were ordinary items that had accompanied him through daily life. But after his dєatᩚh, each carried a significance that was almost impossible to bear.

The wedding ring was particularly poignant.

Only 11 days earlier, it had symbolised the beginning of their marriage and the promises they had made to each other.

Now, it was being returned to Rute after the loss of the man she had loved since they were young.

She eventually travelled back to Portugal in the van carrying Diogo’s body, accompanied by a close friend.

It was a journey no newly married couple could ever imagine making.

ELEVEN DAYS AFTER THEIR WEDDING

Diogo and Rute had shared a relationship that began long before he became a household name in football.

Their wedding had been a celebration of a bond built over years, and Diogo had recently enjoyed a remarkable period in his professional career.

The Liverpool forward had helped the club win the Premier League title in the 2024–25 season and had also celebrated success with Portugal at the UEFA Nations League.

At 28, he was a husband, a father of three and an established international footballer with much of his life seemingly ahead of him.

His younger brother André, 25, was also a footballer, playing for Portuguese club Penafiel.

For Rute and the wider family, however, the tᩚraɢedy was not defined by football achievements or public recognition.

It was the loss of two brothers, a husband, a father and a son — and the sudden disappearance of the future they had expected to share.

A STORY THAT GOES BEYOND FOOTBALL

The new biography, Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts, brings together memories from family members, friends, teammates and coaches to tell the story of his life and career.

Written by Portuguese author and former professional footballer José Delgado, the book includes Rute’s account of the night she learned that her husband and brother-in-law had died.

Liverpool FC has said that the publication celebrates not only Diogo’s achievements on the pitch, but also his character, relationships and the lasting impact he had on those around him.

Proceeds from sales through Liverpool FC also support a grassroots football programme established in Diogo’s name through the LFC Foundation. <Cite refs={[“turn200101search1”]}/>

For readers, Rute’s account offers a perspective that statistics and match highlights cannot capture.

It shows the ordinary details that surround a sudden loss: a message waiting to be read, an unanswered call, a family trying to find information and the desperate hope that the worst explanation cannot possibly be true.

THE MESSAGE THAT WILL ALWAYS REMAIN UNREAD

The message Rute sent to Diogo was not a goodbye.

It was an everyday message between a husband and wife, sent with the expectation that they would speak again soon.

She wanted him to see a video and call when he stopped travelling.

There was no reason for her to imagine that it would become part of the final communication she shared with him.

Then the hours passed, the messages remained unanswered and a phone call brought words she could never have prepared herself to hear.

Rute’s account preserves the painful reality of that night — not simply the moment a football star’s dєatᩚh became international news, but the moment a wife began to understand that her husband was not coming home.

Eleven days after celebrating their wedding, Rute Cardoso was left facing a future she had never imagined. Diogo Jota and André Silva are remembered around the world for their football, but for the people who loved them most, their legacy will always be deeply personal: two brothers, a beloved husband and father, and lives that ended far too soon.

Based on accounts published in Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts and reporting by Liverpool FC and other news outlets. The 𝔠r𝘢sh occurred in Spain on July 3, 2025.
