“HE WAS THE CENTRE OF OUR WORLD”: HEARTBROKEN FAMILY’S TRIBUTE TO NOAH WOODS, 3, AFTER TRAGIC POND DISCOVERY
More than 1,300 people joined the search for the little boy after he disappeared from a playground in Suffolk. An inquest later heard how he left the play area through a gap in a fence, prompting renewed questions about safety and supervision.
A family has been left heartbroken after their three-year-old son, Noah Woods, was found in a pond following an extensive search that brought together hundreds of volunteers and emergency workers.
Noah disappeared on September 15, 2026, after visiting a playground in Brantham, Suffolk, with a relative.
His disappearance sparked an urgent search involving police officers, specialist divers, coastguard teams, search-and-rescue volunteers and members of the public who travelled from across the country hoping to help bring him home safely.
But on September 16, police divers discovered the body of a child in nearby Decoy Pond.
The following day, Noah’s identity was formally confirmed, bringing a devastating end to the search.
His father, Rhys Woods, later shared an emotional tribute to his son, describing him as “the sweetest and most innocent little boy, with nothing but love to give”.
A SEARCH THAT UNITED AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY
Noah was last seen at a play area in Merriam Close, Brantham, during the afternoon of September 15.
When he could no longer be located, a major search operation began. Police released CCTV footage showing Noah at the playground and appealed to residents to check their doorbell cameras, home security systems and dashcam recordings.
The response was extraordinary.
Approximately 1,300 members of the public joined efforts to search the village and surrounding areas. Some travelled considerable distances to assist, while local businesses and community venues helped provide support for those involved.
Police worked alongside specialist search teams, the coastguard, fire and rescue personnel and other emergency services.
As the hours passed, Noah’s family waited for news, hoping that someone would find him safe.
Instead, the discovery at Decoy Pond brought the most heartbreaking outcome they could have imagined.
WHAT THE INQUEST HEARD ABOUT HIS DISAPPEARANCE
At a hearing at Suffolk Coroner’s Court on September 25, investigators outlined the circumstances surrounding Noah’s disappearance.
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Connick told the hearing that CCTV footage showed Noah playing with his relative at the playground earlier that afternoon.
The footage was motion-activated, meaning it did not record every moment continuously.
According to the evidence presented, Noah left the play area through a gap in the fence and entered a nearby memorial garden through an open gate.
His relative followed closely behind and called after him, but Noah continued along a path towards Decoy Pond.
After approximately 200 metres, the relative could no longer see him.
Police were contacted, and the large-scale search began.
The following day, divers from the Metropolitan Police recovered Noah’s body among submerged tree roots, approximately five metres from the pond’s bank.
The depth of the water at that location was estimated to be around 1.8 metres.
The inquest was adjourned to a later date, with further proceedings expected to examine the circumstances surrounding his dєatᩚh.
A LITTLE BOY WHO BROUGHT JOY TO HIS FAMILY
In a tribute shared through Suffolk Police, Noah’s family described him as a happy, cheeky and playful child who loved to laugh and brought joy wherever he went.
“He was at the centre of our world,” the family said.
Noah lived with his mother, father and younger baby brother. His parents described the bond between the two boys as particularly special.
Noah adored his little brother, enjoyed entertaining him and wanted to be close to him whenever possible.
His family also shared that Noah had mild hearing loss and delayed speech. He was being assessed for autism but had not received a diagnosis.
They said he had been learning new words and making progress, and that they treasured the sound of his voice.
“One of the things we miss most is the special sound of his voice,” they said.
Their words revealed the everyday moments that now carry the greatest significance: his laughter, his growing vocabulary and the affection he showed towards his younger sibling.
HIS FATHER’S HEARTBREAKING MESSAGE
Following the discovery, Noah’s father expressed gratitude to the thousands of people who had offered help and support during the search.
He said there were no words to describe the family’s pain and explained that they had continued hoping Noah might be found somewhere nearby.
The response from the community had brought comfort during the darkest period of their lives, he said.
In his message to his son, Rhys wrote that Noah would be loved forever and never forgotten.
He also reflected on the privilege of being Noah’s parent and the amount of love the family had shared during his short life.
The tribute resonated with people across the country, many of whom had followed the search and hoped for a safe outcome.
FRESH QUESTIONS ABOUT PLAYGROUND SAFETY
The inquest’s account of how Noah left the play area has also drawn attention to the physical surroundings and the route towards the nearby pond.
Evidence that he passed through a gap in a fence and then through an open gate raises important questions about how children’s play areas are separated from surrounding spaces.
However, the hearing on September 25 was an opening-stage proceeding, and it did not establish all the circumstances or determine responsibility for Noah’s dєatᩚh.
Further inquest proceedings will be needed before any broader conclusions can be drawn.
Police have said that Noah’s dєatᩚh is not being treated as suspicious. His medical cause of dєatᩚh remained subject to further investigation in the reports available after the initial hearing.
A FAMILY ASKING FOR TIME TO GRIEVE
The enormous public response demonstrated how deeply Noah’s disappearance affected people who had never met him.
But police also urged the public to respect the family’s privacy as they faced the loss of their young son.
For Noah’s parents, the support of strangers cannot replace the child they expected to watch grow up.
They are left with memories of a playful little boy who loved to laugh, a devoted older brother and a child whose future was full of possibilities.
Noah Woods’ story is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a family’s ordinary day can become an unimaginable tᩚraɢedy. As the inquest process continues, his loved ones hope he will be remembered not only for the circumstances of his disappearance, but for the joy, warmth and love he brought into their lives.
