The most disturbing question in Ohio’s Siders case may no longer be simply what happened inside the Hamden home — but how long the children were allowed to disappear from ordinary society while warning signs were already on record.
On June 30, authorities found 16 children, ages roughly 18 months to 18 years, living in a severely neglected home. Officials said the children had been largely confined to a roughly 12-by-12-foot room, with human waste present. Seven were hospitalized following the rescue.
But newly surfaced records push the timeline back years.
In 2021, school officials filed six truancy complaints involving Siders children who had reportedly missed every day of school for months. The records classified them as habitual truants after more than 72 hours of unexcused absences. Those cases were later dropped after authorities could not locate the parents.
Even more striking, newly reviewed Gallia County court records show that child-welfare authorities had already intervened in 2020 and 2021. Nineteen dependency cases involved concerns including schooling, medical follow-up, elevated lead levels and an infestation. The children nevertheless remained with their parents, and the cases were eventually closed after officials determined the family had made sufficient progress.
That creates the central question now facing investigators and the public:
How does a child become invisible when insтιтutions have already been warned?
This was not simply about missing classrooms. School is one of the places where a child’s health, development, social interaction and basic welfare can become visible to outsiders. When children disappear from that system, the ordinary checkpoints of childhood disappear with them.
And the latest court developments add another layer. All four adults charged in the case have sought competency evaluations; a judge also ordered a competency and insanity evaluation for Elizabeth Siders.
The allegations remain allegations, and the criminal case is ongoing. But the emerging record suggests the tᩚraɢedy did not begin on the day police entered the house.
The harder question is whether the system had already seen pieces of the darkness — and simply failed to connect them.
