A HEAVENLY CREATION: INCLUSIVE HALLOWEEN COSTUME BRINGS JOY TO YOUNG STUDENT

When nine-year-old Kaelyn imagined her Halloween costume, she envisioned herself as a princess angel. Because she uses a wheelchair due to congenital myasthenic syndrome—a rare condition that causes muscle weakness—her costume needed to incorporate her mobility equipment seamlessly. Older students at Babcock Neighborhood School in Florida stepped up to transform her wheelchair into a breathtaking angel throne, complete with magnificent wings designed specifically for her.

What made this project exceptional was the thoughtful approach taken by the students. Instead of simply building something for Kaelyn, they actively involved her in every stage of the design process. They asked about her favorite colors, listened attentively to her ideas, and ensured every decision reflected her vision. This level of collaboration highlights a crucial lesson: true inclusion begins by asking children what they want and respecting their answers.

By incorporating her wheelchair into the theme rather than treating it as an obstacle, the students created an imaginative and beautiful design centered entirely on Kaelyn. For the young girl, this meant attending the Halloween celebration as the exact character she had envisioned, proudly displaying a creation she helped bring to life.
