Lindsay Clancy’s Attorney Calls for Presidential Pardon After Murder Trial Ends in Mistrial

Just days after a Mᴀssachusetts jury failed to reach a verdict in the high-profile murder case against Lindsay Clancy, her defense attorney made a public appeal for the president to consider granting her a pardon.

Lindsay Clancy, 36, faced charges in connection with the January 2023 deaths of her three young children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan — at the family’s home near Boston. Prosecutors argued that she deliberately caused the children’s deaths. The defense maintained that she should not be held criminally responsible because she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time of the incident.

After a lengthy trial and approximately seven days of jury deliberations, a judge declared a mistrial on September 4, 2026, because the panel could not agree on a unanimous decision. Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz has indicated that a decision on whether to retry the case will be made in the near future. A court hearing later in September is expected to address the next procedural steps.

In a September 8 interview on Good Morning America, defense attorney Kevin Reddington directly addressed the president. He asked that consideration be given to a pardon for his client, describing her as a young woman who has been through significant hardship and highlighting the type of person she is. Reddington also expressed willingness to discuss possible resolutions with prosecutors, including the potential for a negotiated outcome that both sides could accept after reviewing the evidence presented at trial.

The president had previously commented on the case, calling it a “terrible situation” and noting that there would be consequences, whether through insтιтutional care, incarceration, or another form of accountability.

Legal observers have pointed out an important limitation under the U.S. Consтιтution: the president’s authority to grant pardons applies only to federal offenses. The charges against Lindsay Clancy are state criminal charges filed in Mᴀssachusetts, meaning a presidential pardon would not apply to her case.

On the same day, attorneys representing Patrick Clancy — Lindsay’s former husband and the father of the three children — issued a strong statement. They condemned what they described as a “relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign” targeting him. The statement alleged that false and baseless claims, including unsupported theories that he was involved in the children’s deaths, have been spread by certain online figures and conspiracy theorists. Law enforcement has been notified, the attorneys said, and those responsible should expect consequences. The statement emphasized Patrick Clancy’s desire to focus on preserving the memory of his children and supporting women dealing with perinatal mєntal health challenges.

The mistrial has left the case unresolved and intensified public attention. While the defense continues to seek alternatives to a second trial, prosecutors retain the option of retrying the matter. The coming weeks are expected to clarify the path forward for all parties involved.
