BIG CAT BACK ON DISPLAY: MIXED EMOTIONS AS YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK REOPENS AFTER FATAL TIGER INCIDENT

Visitors returned to Yorkshire Wildlife Park just six days after 24-year-old William Chapman lost his life after entering a tiger enclosure. As Altai the tiger was seen again by members of the public, the park faced a difficult reopening amid an ongoing investigation and questions from the victim’s family.

VISITORS RETURN AFTER A tᩚraɢedy THAT SHOCKED THE COMMUNITY

Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, England, reopened its gates on Friday, October 16, following the dєatᩚh of William Chapman, 24, who sustained fatal injuries after entering a tiger enclosure on October 10.

The reopening marked the end of a six-day closure following the incident, which prompted an outpouring of sympathy for William’s family and concern for the staff who witnessed and responded to the events.

Visitors gradually returned to the attraction, including the Land of the Tigers area where the incident occurred. According to ITV News, attendance was relatively quiet on the first day, with some visitors stopping at the viewing walkway to see the animals.

For many, the visit was an opportunity to return to a much-loved family attraction. For others, the reopening came with the knowledge that a young man had recently lost his life there.

The animal involved in the incident, a male Amur tiger named Altai, remained at the park.

Before reopening, Yorkshire Wildlife Park issued a statement confirming that the tiger was safe and well and would not be euthanised as a result of the incident.

The park also stressed that the welfare of Altai and the other animals remained a priority for its experienced animal-care team.

Altai’s return to public view was one of the most closely watched aspects of the reopening. Some visitors expressed sympathy for the park’s staff, while others said they had come simply to see the animals as they would on any other visit.

The park asked visitors to treat staff with understanding and respect, noting that specialist trauma support and ongoing care were being provided to those affected.

WHAT HAPPENED TO WILLIAM CHAPMAN?

An opening inquest hearing at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15 heard that William entered the tiger enclosure at approximately 1:30 p.m. on October 10 after climbing over two fences.

The coroner’s officer said William was approached by the tiger and sustained multiple traumatic injuries. An initial post-mortem examination found that these injuries caused his dєatᩚh.

Park staff secured the animal, and emergency services attended the scene, but William was pronounced dead.

His family later described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was deeply loved by those closest to him.

The family has also asked people not to share footage of the incident, saying that its circulation has caused them severe distress.

Their loss has remained central to public discussion, even as the park has resumed welcoming visitors.

The opening inquest also heard that William had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and had experienced previous episodes of psychosis. He was under the care of adult mєntal health services in Doncaster, but was described at the hearing as highly independent and having no care requirements.

His family had raised concerns about his contact with mєntal health services before his dєatᩚh.

The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched an investigation into his care. Separately, the City of Doncaster Council is conducting a health and safety investigation into the incident at the park.

These inquiries are intended to establish the relevant circumstances and examine any issues that require further attention. No conclusions should be drawn about whether any particular service or safety measure could have prevented the tᩚraɢedy before the investigations are complete.

THE PARK SAYS SAFETY REMAINS ITS PRIORITY

In its reopening statement, Yorkshire Wildlife Park expressed condolences to William’s family and thanked members of the public who had sent messages of support to its staff.

The park said it was continuing to assist South Yorkshire Police and other relevant agencies with their inquiries.

It also explained that reopening followed engagement with the relevant authorities.

The decision to reopen the Land of the Tigers area meant visitors could once again view the animals, while investigations into the circumstances of William’s dєatᩚh continued.

The park has not publicly commented further on the details of the incident while those inquiries remain active.

A FULL INQUEST IS STILL AHEAD

Senior Coroner Nicola Mundy adjourned the inquest until March 18, 2027.

In the meantime, the NHS investigation and the council’s health and safety inquiry remain important parts of the process of establishing the full circumstances surrounding William’s dєatᩚh.

The reopening of Yorkshire Wildlife Park marks a return to normal operations for the attraction, but it does not bring the wider investigation to an end.

For William’s family, the loss is permanent. For park staff, the incident has been an exceptionally difficult experience. And for visitors, seeing Altai again may bring different emotions — from concern for the animal to sadness about the young man who died.

As the inquiries continue, the priority remains to respect William’s loved ones, avoid speculation and allow the evidence to establish what happened.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has reopened, but the questions surrounding William Chapman’s dєatᩚh remain under investigation.
