ONLY 138 CHILDREN WORLDWIDE ARE BELIEVED TO SHARE GABRIEL’S ULTRA-RARE GENETIC SYNDROME — THE LITTLE BOY LIVING WITH A CONDITION THAT MEDICINE IS STILL STRUGGLING TO EXPLAIN

Doctors warned his parents he might not have much time — but gabriel surprised everyone, and his rare condition has left his family searching for answers

When Gabriel Esdras was still growing inside his mother, his parents were already preparing for a difficult journey.

During a detailed ultrasound, doctors discovered multiple abnormalities affecting his skull and warned that he might not survive long after birth.

But when Gabriel finally arrived, he surprised everyone. He did not need breathing support — and he was ready to fight.

Now 1 year and 4 months old, Gabriel is living with an extraordinarily rare genetic condition identified in only around 138 children worldwide. His syndrome has no official name yet, leaving his family with many unanswered questions about his future.

Doctors have identified chromosomal abnormalities associated with multiple cranial malformations. One challenge is that Gabriel cannot fully close his eyes because the skin around them is very tight. His parents carefully use eye drops and exercises to help protect his eyes.

Yet despite these challenges, Gabriel continues to grow and develop.

“He is such a happy and loving child,” his mother, Rita, said. “He doesn’t turn away from people. Everyone who meets him is amazed by how sweet and friendly he is.”

His father, Michel Augusto, explained that doctors told them only around 138 children worldwide were known to have the condition, which still has no official name.

Raising Gabriel means navigating numerous medical appointments, therapies and unanswered questions while caring for their three other children, including their six-year-old son Samuel, who is autistic.

The family receives care through a rare-disease institution near their hometown of Bayeux, Paraíba, Brazil. Gabriel attends physiotherapy, but accessing other specialists has been difficult because of long waiting lists.

His parents are now reaching out through social media, hoping to connect with healthcare professionals who can help Gabriel access the multidisciplinary care he needs, including nutrition, orthopedics, neurosurgery and neurogenetics.

“We know many other children are waiting too, and we don’t blame the institution,” Michel explained. “We are simply asking for help so Gabriel can receive the right care and have the best possible development.”

Rita knows their journey may not always be easy, but she refuses to let her son’s condition define him.

“Gabriel is a child like any other,” she said. “He was simply born with this cranial condition. We want people to look beyond his appearance and see the beautiful child he truly is.”

She added: “We are doing everything we can to give our children love, care and the best life possible. We ask people to support us with kindness, because every bit of help can make a difference in their future.”
