BIG CAT BACK ON DISPLAY: YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK REOPENS AFTER tᩚraɢedy AS VISITORS RETURN

The Doncaster attraction has welcomed visitors back following the dєatᩚh of 24-year-old William Chapman, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the heartbreaking incident.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park reopened its gates on Friday, October 16, 2026, nearly a week after William Chapman died following an incident involving a tiger inside its enclosure.

The 24-year-old lost his life on October 10 after entering the enclosure housing Altai, an Amur tiger, at the wildlife park near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

The incident prompted the attraction to close temporarily while authorities began investigating what had happened.

As visitors returned, the atmosphere was marked by mixed emotions, with many expressing sympathy for William’s loved ones and for the staff who witnessed or were affected by the tᩚraɢedy.

VISITORS RETURN AS ALTAl REMAINS AT THE PARK

Among the first visitors were families and wildlife enthusiasts who came back to the attraction following its reopening.

Some expressed their support for the park’s employees, recognising the emotional impact such an incident could have on those working at the facility.

Visitors also returned to the tiger viewing area, where Altai remained under the care of the park’s animal team.

In an official statement issued on October 15, Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that Altai was safe and would not be euthanised as a result of the incident.

The park said the welfare of its animals, visitors and staff remained a priority. It also confirmed that specialist trauma support was being provided to affected employees.

Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding William’s dєatᩚh.

An initial post-mortem examination found that he died from multiple traumatic injuries following the encounter with the tiger.

At the opening of the inquest on October 15, the hearing was told that William had climbed over two fences and entered the enclosure.

The inquest also heard that William had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced episodes of psychosis. His family had raised concerns about his contact with mєntal health services, prompting an investigation by the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust.

These details form part of the wider inquiry and should not be taken as establishing a single explanation for the incident.

The City of Doncaster Council has also launched a health and safety investigation and is expected to share its findings with the coroner.

While the park has resumed operations, William’s dєatᩚh has left his family and loved ones facing an enormous loss.

His family previously described him as a bright, warm and engaging young man and asked people to treat his memory with respect.

They have also expressed distress over the circulation of graphic footage of the incident online, urging the public not to share material that could cause further pain.

A FORMAL INQUEST IS EXPECTED IN 2027

The inquest into William’s dєatᩚh has been adjourned until March 18, 2027, as investigations continue.

For now, the park remains open while it cooperates with the relevant authorities. Altai continues to receive care from the animal team, and the park has asked visitors to show understanding toward staff members affected by the tᩚraɢedy.

The reopening marks a return to normal operations for the attraction, but the questions surrounding William’s dєatᩚh remain under investigation.

🕊️ As the inquiries continue, thoughts remain with William Chapman’s family, friends and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.
