TEACHER JUMPED INTO THE WATER TO SAVE HER 10-YEAR-OLD STUDENT — BUT BOTH DIED IN HEARTBREAKING FIELD TRIP tᩚraɢedy
A fifth-grade teacher told her students to call 911 as she desperately tried to save a boy who had slipped into a reservoir. Neither she nor the child survived. Now, newly released details reveal the final moments of a tᩚraɢedy that devastated two families and an entire school community.
A school field trip in Iowa turned into an unimaginable nightmare when 10-year-old Ahmed Osman fell into the water and his teacher, 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen, immediately jumped in to rescue him.
Both lost their lives.
The tᩚraɢedy occurred on September 22, 2026, during a trip to the Macbride Nature Recreation Area near the Coralville Reservoir in Johnson County, Iowa. According to an update released by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office on October 23, the class had been taking part in a woodland hike before stopping for lunch near the shoreline.
What should have been an ordinary school outing became a desperate rescue attempt that neither family could have imagined.
A SUDDEN FALL INTO THE RESERVOIR
Hannah, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary School, was leading a group of 14 students on the outdoor trip.
During the lunch break, Ahmed stepped into water flowing down the Lake Macbride Spillway. He slipped on the rocks and fell into the Coralville Reservoir, authorities said.
Hannah reacted immediately.
Without hesitation, the 24-year-old teacher entered the water in an attempt to save her young student. She left her phone on the shore, but even as she tried to help Ahmed, she knew emergency assistance was needed.
According to the sheriff’s office, Hannah directed her students to call 911.
One student used the teacher’s phone to contact emergency services, while other children alerted a bystander on the opposite side of the spillway.
In the middle of a terrifying emergency, the students were left witnessing a moment that would change their lives forever.
A TEACHER’S DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO SAVE HER STUDENT
A bystander also jumped into the reservoir in an attempt to rescue Ahmed and Hannah.
Despite the efforts, he was unable to save either of them and eventually returned safely to shore. He remained with the children until emergency responders arrived.
Multiple agencies responded after the emergency call came in at approximately 12:10 p.m.
Hannah was recovered from the water at 12:43 p.m. on September 22 and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The search for Ahmed continued into the following day. His body was recovered at approximately 1:24 p.m. on September 23.
The 13 students who witnessed the incident and the bystander were interviewed as part of the investigation.
The loss of both teacher and student has left their families and the school community grieving a tᩚraɢedy that unfolded in a matter of moments.
“WE DIDN’T BELIEVE HE WOULD LEAVE US THIS SOON”
For Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Osman, the loss of his 10-year-old son is a heartbreak no parent should ever have to endure.
Speaking to The New York Times after the tᩚraɢedy, Mohamed expressed the shock of losing his child so young.
“We didn’t believe he would leave us this soon,” he said.
He added that Ahmed had left behind “a lot of dreams.”
Those words paint a painful picture of a childhood interrupted far too soon. Ahmed was only 10 years old, with so much still to discover, experience and become.
His family is now left to hold on to memories of a boy whose future had seemed full of possibilities.
REMEMBERING HANNAH JORGENSEN
Hannah was just 24 years old, beginning her career as an educator and working with children at Borlaug Elementary.
Her decision to enter the water in an attempt to save Ahmed has brought renewed attention to the desperate circumstances surrounding their deaths.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, the Iowa City Community School District mourned both victims.
“Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district,” the district said.
The school community also expressed its condolences to their families, Hannah’s colleagues and students, and Ahmed’s classmates and friends.
Counselors and additional support staff were made available to help students and employees cope with the devastating loss.
The children who witnessed the incident were not only confronted with the sudden dєatᩚh of a classmate, but also the loss of a teacher who had been there to guide and protect them.
TWO LIVES LOST, TWO FAMILIES FOREVER CHANGED
The tᩚraɢedy has left behind two grieving families and a community struggling to process what happened beside the water that September afternoon.
For Ahmed’s loved ones, there is the pain of losing a 10-year-old boy who had so many dreams ahead of him.
For Hannah’s family, there is the unbearable loss of a young woman whose life and teaching career ended far too soon.
And for the students who were there, the memories of that day may remain with them for years to come.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remained ongoing in its latest update.
Hannah Jorgensen went into the water trying to save a child. Ahmed Osman was only 10 years old, with his whole life ahead of him. Their deaths are a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can become an unimaginable tᩚraɢedy.
May both Hannah and Ahmed rest in peace, and may their families find strength and comfort in the difficult days ahead. 🕊️🤍
