TEACHER JUMPED INTO THE WATER TO SAVE HER 10-YEAR-OLD STUDENT — BOTH DIED IN HEARTBREAKING FIELD TRIP tᩚraɢedy
A school field trip turned into an unimaginable tᩚraɢedy when a 24-year-old teacher jumped into a reservoir to rescue a fifth-grade student who had slipped into the water. Despite her desperate efforts, both the young boy and his teacher lost their lives. New details have now revealed the heartbreaking moments that unfolded that day.
A 10-year-old boy and his 24-year-old teacher died during a school field trip to the Macbride Nature Recreation Area in Johnson County, Iowa, on September 22, 2026.
The student, Ahmed Osman, was on the outing with his fifth-grade class from Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville. His teacher, Hannah Jorgensen, had led 14 students on a woodland hike before the group stopped for lunch near the Coralville Reservoir.
What should have been an ordinary educational outing became a devastating emergency when Ahmed stepped into water flowing down the Lake Macbride Spillway, slipped on the rocks and fell into the reservoir, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
SHE DIDN’T HESITATE TO TRY TO SAVE HIM
When Hannah saw her student fall into the water, she immediately jumped in to try to rescue him.
Her phone had been left on the shore. Once in the water, she directed her students to call 911.
One student used Hannah’s phone to contact emergency services, while other children alerted a bystander on the opposite side of the spillway.
The bystander also entered the water in an attempt to save the teacher and boy. However, he was unable to reach them safely and returned to shore. He remained with the children until emergency responders arrived.
The incident left the school community facing the devastating loss of a young student and a teacher who had entered the water in an attempt to save him.
A DESPERATE SEARCH FOR TWO LIVES
Emergency services received the call at approximately 12:10 p.m. local time.
Hannah’s body was recovered from the water at 12:43 p.m., and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The search for Ahmed continued into the following day. His body was recovered from the reservoir on September 23 at approximately 1:24 p.m.
The 13 students who witnessed the incident, along with the bystander who attempted the rescue, were interviewed by authorities as part of the investigation.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has said the investigation remains ongoing.
“WE DIDN’T BELIEVE HE WOULD LEAVE US THIS SOON”
For Ahmed’s family, the loss of their young son has been beyond heartbreaking.
His father, Mohamed Osman, expressed the family’s disbelief and grief in an interview with The New York Times.
“We didn’t believe he would leave us this soon,” he said, reflecting on a boy whose life held so much promise.
He also spoke of the many dreams Ahmed had left behind — dreams that would never have the chance to unfold.
At Borlaug Elementary and throughout the Iowa City Community School District, the deaths of Ahmed and Hannah have been deeply felt.
In a statement, the district described both as valued members of its community and extended condolences to their families, classmates, colleagues and friends. Support was also made available to students and staff coping with the tᩚraɢedy.
TWO LIVES LOST, A COMMUNITY IN MOURNING
Hannah Jorgensen was just 24 years old. Ahmed Osman was only 10.
One was a young teacher guiding children through a learning experience; the other was a fifth-grader with years of childhood still ahead of him.
Their deaths have left families grieving and classmates facing the loss of people who were part of their everyday lives.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tᩚraɢedy. For now, the community is left to mourn two lives lost in a matter of moments.
May Ahmed rest in peace, and may Hannah be remembered for the courage she showed in attempting to save her student. Heartfelt condolences to both families and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tᩚraɢedy. 🤍🕊️
