Vigil Turns diᩚadℓy in New Jersey as Gunfire Leaves One Dead and Several Injured

A vigil in New Jersey turned into a diᩚadℓy śh́óóting scene after gunfire erupted among a gathering of mourners, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
The śh́óóting happened on Monday evening, October 26, 2026, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, near Irvington Avenue and Oakwood Place. According to reports, people had gathered to remember a man who was shot and killed in the area approximately seven years ago when the violence broke out.
Witnesses described hearing a barrage of gunshots as people scrambled for safety. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while as many as four others were reported injured.
Three victims were transported to University Hospital in Newark. One had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, while the other two were shot in the arms and legs. The father of an 18-year-old victim told CBS News that his son was fighting for his life in the hospital.
The scale of the śh́óóting became apparent as investigators examined a crime scene that stretched across several blocks. Witnesses reported seeing more than 20 evidence markers on the ground, while authorities collected shell casings and other potential evidence.
Investigators are also examining a possible vehicle connection. Police said a red sedan was seen leaving the area after the śh́óóting. About an hour later, a red sedan was found burning in Newark, approximately four miles away. Authorities have not confirmed whether the vehicle was connected to the attack.
As of October 27, no arrests had been announced, and the identities of the deceased and injured victims had not been publicly released in the reports reviewed.

The motive for the śh́óóting remains unclear. Authorities are continuing to investigate what happened during the vigil and who was responsible for the gunfire.
What began as a gathering to remember a life lost years earlier has now left another family grieving and a community searching for answers.
