Susan Saint James diᩚєs at 80: The Heartbreaking Family tᩚraɢedy She Turned Into a Lifetime of Compassion

She made millions smile on television. But behind the laughter was a mother who endured an unimaginable loss — and spent the rest of her life helping others find their way through grief.

Susan Saint James, the Emmy-winning actress beloved for Kate & Allie and McMillan & Wife, has died at 80.

Saint James died on October 26, 2026, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, her representative confirmed to PEOPLE.

For decades, she brought warmth, humor and independence to American television. Yet one of the most defining chapters of her life unfolded far from the cameras, when a devastating family tᩚraɢedy forced her to confront a loss no parent should have to endure.

Her family remembered her as a woman who instinctively reached out to people who needed encouragement, valuing kindness and human connection more than money or fame.

The Television Star Who Made Women Feel Seen

Born Susan Jane Miller in Los Angeles in 1946, Saint James grew up in Rockford, Illinois, before pursuing a career in modeling and acting.

Her breakthrough came with The Name of the Game, earning her an Emmy Award in 1969. She later became a familiar face as Sally McMillan opposite Rock Hudson in McMillan & Wife.

But her most enduring television role arrived in 1984, when she joined Jane Curtin in Kate & Allie.

The CBS sitcom followed two divorced women who built a household together while raising their children. Saint James portrayed Kate McArdle, a spirited woman navigating independence, friendship and motherhood.

The series ran for six seasons and helped establish her place in television history.

When the show ended in 1989, Saint James largely stepped away from acting. She wanted to give her children the stability and attention that had mattered so much in her own upbringing.

It was a choice that reflected where her priorities truly lay.

The Day Her Family’s World Changed Forever

In November 2004, Saint James experienced a devastating loss when a private plane carrying her husband, television executive Dick Ebersol, and their sons crashed in Colorado.

Her 14-year-old son, Edward, known as Teddy, died in the accident. Ebersol and their son Charles survived with serious injuries.

The tᩚraɢedy changed the family forever.

In the years that followed, Saint James spoke about the challenge of learning to live with the dєatᩚh of a child. She did not pretend that grief could simply disappear or that there was an easy way forward.

Instead, she searched for a way to carry the loss while continuing to live.

Her family later recalled one particularly moving moment: weeks after Teddy’s dєatᩚh, she delivered his eulogy in the form of personal notes addressed to her husband and each of her other children.

Even as she mourned her youngest son, she was trying to give the people she loved words that might help them begin to heal.

It was an extraordinary act of care during an unbearable time.

Thousands of Letters, One Handwritten Response at a Time

The family’s loss prompted an extraordinary response from strangers who wanted them to know they were not alone.

According to PEOPLE, Saint James received approximately 27,000 letters of support after the 𝔠r𝘢sh and personally answered around 15,000 with handwritten notes.

Her response revealed something important about the woman behind the celebrity name.

She understood that people who were grieving often needed more than sympathy. They needed to feel heard, remembered and connected to others who understood their pain.

She later extended that compassion to other parents who had lost children, offering friendship and support to people facing a similarly devastating reality.

Her own grief never became a simple story of overcoming tᩚraɢedy. Instead, she found ways to turn what she had experienced into compassion for others.

A Legacy Beyond Hollywood

Saint James devoted much of her later life to her family and charitable causes, including Special Olympics.

She attended the organization’s first games in Chicago in 1968 and remained involved for decades, serving on its board and supporting fundraising efforts.

She also explored new interests away from the entertainment industry, including gardening and business ventures.

Her family remembered someone who could make a stranger feel like the most important person in the room.

That quality extended from major charitable events to everyday encounters with people who might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

She was not simply remembered for the characters she played. She was remembered for how she treated people when the cameras were gone.

A Final Farewell to a Woman Who Chose Kindness

Saint James leaves behind her husband, Dick Ebersol; her children Sunshine Lucas, Harmony Lucas, Charles Ebersol and William Ebersol; seven grandchildren; and her sister, Mary Mercedes Dewey.

Her youngest son, Teddy, preceded her in dєatᩚh.

For television audiences, her passing marks the loss of an actress whose work helped define an era. For her family, it means saying goodbye to a woman whose love and resilience helped them navigate both ordinary life and extraordinary heartbreak.

Her story does not suggest that kindness erases grief. It shows that even after devastating loss, people can continue to care for others while carrying their own pain.

Susan Saint James spent years making audiences laugh. Away from the screen, she spent much of her life reminding people that compassion matters most when someone is hurting.

And perhaps that is the legacy her family hopes will endure longest: not simply the roles she played, but the thousands of people she made feel less alone.

May she rest in peace, and may her family find comfort in the love and memories she leaves behind.
