A 16-year-old mother who survived a medical crisis, a two-month coma and the devastation of Hurricane Maria is finally celebrating a moment of hope — as her four-month-old daughter, Veronica, undergoes procedures in a bid to restore her sight.
Baby Veronica Sofia Velez-Ramos was born nearly three months prematurely and diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), an eye condition that can threaten a premature baby’s vision.

Her journey to treatment has been anything but easy.
Veronica’s mother, Darilys Ramos, suffered a ruptured appendix while pregnant. After giving birth, the teenager spent two months in a medically induced coma, leaving her family facing an incredibly uncertain future.
She had only been out of the coma for a few weeks when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, bringing further hardship to a family that had already endured so much.

With hospital electricity becoming unreliable in the aftermath of the hurricane, Darilys and her fragile baby were medically evacuated from the island. Their journey eventually brought them to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson, where they waited anxiously for Veronica to receive the surgery she needed.
For the young mother, every day brought another challenge — recovering from her own ordeal while worrying about her daughter’s future.
Then, finally, came the news the family had been desperately hoping for.

Early Monday morning, the family flew from Jackson to Miami, where four-month-old Veronica began undergoing procedures intended to help preserve or restore her vision.
On Tuesday, Darilys shared the encouraging update that her little girl had received the surgery. So far, everything had gone smoothly.
Although Veronica’s recovery and eventual vision remain uncertain, the successful start has given her family fresh reason to hope.

“We have been through so much, and getting Veronica to this point means everything to us,” the family shared. “We are praying that her treatment goes well and that she has the chance to see the world around her.”
For Darilys, who has fought through a life-threatening medical emergency and the upheaval of leaving her home, this moment represents far more than a hospital procedure. It is another step forward in the life she is building with her daughter.

Veronica is still so young, with so much of the world waiting to be discovered. Her family can only hope that, after months of uncertainty, the road ahead will bring healing and brighter days.
