The medical emergency occurred on October 14, when Rachael became seriously unwell while at work.

Her colleagues immediately rushed to help and attempted to resuscitate her before she was taken to hospital.

Despite their efforts, she remained seriously ill and died six days later, surrounded by the love and support of those closest to her.

Warren Carratt, chief executive of Nexus Multi-Academy Trust, which operates The Willows School, announced her dєatᩚh in a deeply emotional message to families.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you that our beautiful Headteacher, Rachael Booth, passed away earlier today,” he wrote.

He also acknowledged the efforts of school staff during the emergency, explaining that their actions had enabled Rachael’s family and friends to spend time with her during her final days.

For those who worked alongside her, the loss is especially painful. The colleagues who had tried so hard to save her must now come to terms with the absence of someone who had been at the heart of their school community.

Rachael joined The Willows School in January 2010 as a mathematics teacher.

The school supports children and young people aged seven to 19 with special educational needs and disabilities, providing specialist education and support tailored to their individual circumstances.

Over the years, Rachael progressed through several roles before becoming headteacher.

Her career was defined by a commitment to helping pupils develop their abilities, supporting families through difficult circumstances and creating opportunities for young people who needed additional help to thrive.

In his tribute, Carratt described her as an “energetic, compassionate and inspirational Headteacher.”

He said she had touched thousands of lives and made an immeasurable difference to children and families throughout her career in public service.

Her contribution extended far beyond the classroom. For many families, a trusted school leader can become an important source of guidance, reassurance and understanding.

Rachael’s dєatᩚh has left a significant void in a community she had served for more than a decade.

A woman remembered for her kindness and faith

Following the announcement of her passing, flowers, cards and balloons were left outside the school.

Former pupils also shared memories of the teacher who had helped shape their lives.

One former student remembered being taught mathematics by Rachael years earlier, recalling her distinctive classroom and her familiar Doc Martens boots.

The former pupil described her as one of the kindest women to work in education and sent condolences to her family.

Others remembered her as a warm, genuine person whose support had continued to matter long after their school days ended.

Carratt also highlighted Rachael’s deep religious faith, saying she believed there was a better existence beyond this world.

His words offered a glimpse of the beliefs that had helped shape her life and the hope that those who loved her might find comfort in their faith during this painful time.

School closes as pupils and staff grieve

Following Rachael’s dєatᩚh, The Willows School temporarily closed to give staff and pupils time to process the loss.

The school had initially closed after her medical emergency, briefly reopened and then shut again following the announcement of her dєatᩚh.

The trust confirmed that the school was scheduled to reopen on Monday, November 2, after the half-term break.

Carratt reassured parents that staff would share the news with pupils in a planned and personalised way, taking their individual needs into account and providing support where needed.

For children with special educational needs and disabilities, the loss of a familiar and trusted school leader can be particularly difficult. Changes to routines and relationships may bring additional uncertainty at an already emotional time.

The school’s priority is to help pupils understand what has happened while ensuring that staff and families have the support they need.

“The world has been immeasurably better” for her life

In his tribute, Carratt reflected on the lasting impact Rachael had made through her years of service.

He expressed the hope that, when the time was right, the school community would come together to celebrate her life and everything she had contributed to pupils, families and colleagues.

For now, those who knew her are left grieving a woman whose influence reached far beyond her official role.

Her story is not only one of a sudden and devastating loss. It is also a story of years spent helping children learn, encouraging families and supporting young people as they navigated their own challenges.

The flowers outside the school and the memories shared by former pupils are reminders that the difference a teacher makes can last for decades.

 Rest in peace, Rachael Booth

Rachael was 53 when she died, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication and service.

Her colleagues fought desperately to save her when she became unwell. Her family and friends were able to spend her final days beside her, and a community that benefited from her work is now finding ways to honour her memory.

No tribute can fully capture what she meant to everyone who knew and loved her.

But the stories shared by former pupils, the words of her colleagues and the care she gave to children and families all point to a life that made a meaningful difference.

🤍 May Rachael Booth rest in peace. May her family, friends, colleagues and pupils find comfort in the memories she leaves behind, and may her legacy continue through the thousands of lives she touched.
