Bryan Kohberger’s Former Friend Reveals the Disturbing Theory He Has About the Idaho Murders

A former friend of Bryan Kohberger has shared a chilling theory about what may have driven the convicted 𝘬iᩚller to murder four University of Idaho students, while admitting that the true motive remains unknown.

Jack Baylis, who grew up with Kohberger in Pennsylvania, told the Daily Mail that their last reunion in 2021 left him feeling deeply uneasy. Although he could not explain why, he recalled feeling anxious throughout the day and said he could not stop shaking.

At the time, Baylis had no idea that Kohberger would later become responsible for one of the most notorious crimes in recent American history.

The two had known each other since their teenage years, spending time playing video games and discussing relationships. When they reconnected, their conversation reportedly returned to a familiar subject: their difficulties finding romantic partners and being ignored by women.

Baylis recalled that Kohberger also appeared frustrated by rejection. In hindsight, those conversations took on a more disturbing significance, particularly as questions about Kohberger’s relationships with women became part of public speculation surrounding the killings.

Baylis and another acquaintance also discussed whether Kohberger might have identified with online communities associated with involuntary celibacy, commonly known as “incel” culture. However, these were personal theories, not an established explanation for the murders.

When asked what might have motivated his former friend, Baylis offered a particularly unsettling possibility: he wondered whether Kohberger had wanted to experience what it felt like to 𝘬iᩚll someone.

Baylis acknowledged that he had no evidence to support this theory and did not know why Kohberger chose the four students. His comments reflect his own attempt to understand the crime rather than a confirmed motive.

The victims were Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20. They were killed inside an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022.

Kohberger, who was then a criminology doctoral student at Washington State University, pleaded guilty to the four murders in July 2025. He was sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison, avoiding the dєatᩚh penalty under a plea agreement.

Despite the guilty pleas, one major question has remained unanswered: why did he do it?

Kohberger did not publicly provide a clear explanation for his actions as part of the plea agreement. His former friend’s recollections have added another perspective to the discussion, but they do not establish what motivated the killings.

Baylis has also expressed uncertainty about whether he would ever contact Kohberger in prison. He said he wanted to understand what happened but did not want to pretend to have a friendly relationship with someone accused of such horrific acts.

For the families of the four victims, and for those who knew Kohberger before the murders, the absence of a definitive explanation continues to leave painful questions unanswered.
