Gloria Steinem, co-founder of Ms. Magazine, diᩚєs at 92

Gloria Steinem, the influential American journalist, author, and lifelong advocate for women’s equality, has died at the age of 92. She pᴀssed away peacefully on September 3, 2026, at her home in New York City, surrounded by people who were close to her. The announcement came through a statement posted by her foundation on Instagram. No cause of dєatᩚh was publicly disclosed.

Steinem spent more than five decades as one of the most recognizable public faces of the modern women’s rights movement in the United States. She combined investigative journalism, public speaking, organizing, and writing to challenge traditional gender roles and push for greater equality in workplaces, politics, and everyday life. Her foundation noted that she continued working for equality until the end of her life and described her greatest gift as the ability to listen carefully to others, helping people feel seen and heard.

Born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem grew up in a family that moved frequently because of her father’s work as a traveling antique dealer. Her parents separated when she was still a child, after which she lived with and cared for her mother, who struggled with mєntal health challenges. She did not attend school regularly until around the seventh grade. These early experiences shaped her later interest in independence, social issues, and the lives of ordinary women.

Steinem began her professional career as a journalist in New York. In 1963 she gained national attention with an undercover investigation in which she worked as a Playboy Bunny at a New York club. Her resulting article detailed the difficult working conditions and exploitation she observed, helping establish her reputation as a bold investigative reporter. In the years that followed, she became increasingly involved in the growing women’s liberation movement of the late 1960s and 1970s.

In 1972 she co-founded Ms. magazine, one of the first major national publications dedicated primarily to women’s issues rather than traditional subjects such as housekeeping or fashion. The magazine provided a platform for reporting and discussion on discrimination, reproductive rights, politics, and social change at a time when such topics were still controversial in mainstream media. Steinem also helped establish or support several organizations focused on advancing women’s interests, including the Women’s Action Alliance, the Women’s Media Center, Voters for Choice, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, and the Ms. Foundation for Women.

Throughout her career she was a consistent advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment, reproductive freedom, and broader equality. She welcomed the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade and remained active on related issues for decades afterward. In 2013, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, recognizing her contributions to American society.

Steinem did not have biological children. In 2000 she married British activist and businessman David Bale and became stepmother to his son, actor Christian Bale. In her later years she continued writing, speaking, and hosting informal “Talking Circles” at her home, welcoming guests for discussion and community. Her foundation said a forthcoming book, An Unexpected Life, and her efforts to keep her home as a center for social justice conversations were among the lasting projects she left behind.

Her dєatᩚh closes a long public life that helped shift cultural atтιтudes toward women’s roles at home, at work, and in public life. Supporters credit her with helping generations of women develop a stronger sense of self-worth and with pushing issues of equality into the national conversation. Critics sometimes disagreed with her positions or methods, yet few disputed her visibility or influence over more than half a century of activism.
