They Walked In for One Man’s DNA. Sixteen Children Came Out of a Single Room

The search warrant that brought investigators to Ohmer Street in Hamden, Ohio, on June 30, 2026, was not written as a child-welfare check. According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer, agents and sheriff’s deputies went to the rented single-story house because they wanted a DNA sample from Gary Siders Jr., then 36, in a case that had grown out of an earlier Bureau of Criminal Investigation inquiry. Officials later said that inquiry began with a December 2025 complaint involving other members of the extended family, expanded in March 2026 after information about alleged unlawful Sєxual conduct with a minor who was not one of the couple’s own children, and pointed investigators toward Siders Jr.

What they expected inside was evidence connected to that parallel case. What they found instead, authorities said, was sixteen children between about eighteen months and eighteen years old living in conditions so filthy that Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain told the public that local livestock were kept better than the children. The house itself was modest on paper, a roughly 1,850-square-foot five-bedroom, one-bathroom rental with a boarded window and a cluttered porch. Inside, New York Post reporting and official descriptions painted a different picture: rooms stacked with trash, discarded boxes, moldy clothing, crumpled plastic, a stained chest freezer, and a smell of cat urine strong enough that neighbors later said they could catch it from a distance. Investigators said they could not even reach some parts of the house safely.

The children, officials alleged, had spent much of the previous four years crowded into a space of about twelve feet by twelve feet, with a high presence of human feces and bacteria. There were no cages, Sheriff Cain said, but there was also almost no evidence of ordinary childhood. A broken bicycle and a children’s book were among the few items visible outside. Two children were airlifted to Level 1 trauma centers. Seven were hospitalized. At least one was intubated. Attorney General Andy Wilson said that if officers had waited another twenty-four hours, there was a very high probability they would have been dealing with a dєatᩚh or multiple deaths. He called the scene “pure evil” and said the children “looked like almost feral animals.” Those words traveled farther than the warrant that made the discovery possible.Four adults were arrested the same day: Gary Siders Sr., 73; Christina “Lynn” Siders, then 66 or 67; their son Gary “Bub” Siders Jr.; and his wife, Elizabeth Siders, 33, identified by officials and later by her own attorney as the mother of all sixteen children. Each was initially charged with sixteen counts of second-degree felony child endangerment involving serious physical harm.

All pleaded not guilty. Bond was set at $300,000. The younger couple is believed to be the biological parents; the older couple lived in the same house. Officials stressed from the first news conference that this was an intra-family case, not human trafficking and not a random threat to the village. That distinction did not make the discovery less 𝘴h☉𝔠king. It made it more confounding. The children had been living, authorities said, in a small Appalachian county of about 12,600 people, on a quiet ᴅᴇᴀᴅ-end street, for roughly four years after earlier stays in Pike County, Jackson County, and even Wisconsin. The warrant that opened the door was never meant to be a census of children. It became one anyway, and the legal system that followed has been trying ever since to catch up with what was on the other side of that door.
