Newly Engaged New Jersey Man Fights for His Life After Cliff-Jumping Accident in Italy

A 22-year-old man from New Jersey was critically injured in a cliff-jumping accident while vacationing on Italy’s picturesque Amalfi Coast with his fiancée, turning what was meant to be a romantic trip into a medical emergency.

Jacob Fleig, from Berlin Township in Camden County, was injured on October 5 at Fiordo di Furore, a scenic coastal inlet known for its steep cliffs and narrow beach. According to reports, he jumped from a high point above the sea and suffered serious injuries when he entered the water.

The accident came just after Fleig had proposed to his girlfriend, Olivia, during their trip. She accepted his proposal, according to a family member’s social media post.

Fleig was taken to a local hospital before being transferred by helicopter to a hospital in Salerno, where he received intensive care. His brother, Jimmy Dorner, said Fleig had undergone numerous life-saving procedures and surgeries.

The family’s immediate priority has been stabilizing him so he can be transported back to the United States for further treatment, additional surgeries, rehabilitation and long-term care. The cost of his treatment and medical transport has prompted relatives to launch a fundraising campaign.

Dorner described his younger brother as joyful, humorous and charismatic, saying he has overcome many hardships throughout his life. He appealed for financial support and prayers as the family faces an uncertain recovery process.

Friends have also shared messages of support for Fleig, his mother, Kim, and his fiancée. Loved ones are waiting for him to become well enough to return home, where he can continue treatment closer to family.

The circumstances of the accident, including the exact height of the jump, have not been fully established in public reporting. The incident has renewed attention to the risks associated with jumping from cliffs into unfamiliar waters, where hidden rocks, depth changes and the angle of entry can cause catastrophic injuries.
