“SHE HAD ONLY ONE DAY OF LIFE” — MOURNERS WEEP AS BABY MARIA’S TINY WHITE CASKET IS CARRIED INTO CHURCH
A grieving grandfather broke down as he carried the tiny white casket of newborn Maria Skopova into a cathedral in Sheffield. The baby died on the day she was born, and four adults have been charged with her murder.
A Heartbreaking Final Goodbye
A small white casket, a grieving family and a cathedral filled with sorrow marked the funeral of baby Maria Skopova, whose short life ended in devastating circumstances.
On Monday, October 26, mourners gathered at St Marie’s Catholic Cathedral in Sheffield, England, to say their final goodbyes to the newborn, who died on August 30 — the very day she was born. The service was conducted mainly in Slovakian, bringing together people who wanted to pay their respects to the little girl.
One of the most painful moments came outside the cathedral when Maria’s grandfather carried her tiny white casket in his arms. Overcome with grief, he kissed the casket before slowly carrying it through the church doors.
Inside, he placed it near the altar and broke down in tears.
The scene captured the depth of a family’s loss as they prepared to bury a child who had barely begun her life.
A Message of Love Beside Her Casket
A card placed beside Maria’s casket carried a simple, poignant message:
“For Baby Maria. The purest souls never stay too long in this world. With love from a mum x.”
The words offered a tender expression of love amid the grief surrounding the funeral.
For those attending, the service was not only an opportunity to mourn Maria’s dєatᩚh but also a moment to recognize her as a little girl whose life mattered, despite lasting only a single day.
Reverend Father Chris Posluszny, who led the service, described the funeral as an important moment for the family as they try to rebuild their lives following the tᩚraɢedy.
A further private service was held at a Sheffield cemetery for Maria’s family and close loved ones.
What Happened to Baby Maria?
Maria was found dead at a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area of Sheffield on August 30, after police responded to concerns about the safety of an infant.
A post-mortem examination determined that she had died from stab wounds. The circumstances of her dєatᩚh prompted a major police investigation and criminal proceedings.
The case initially identified the child publicly as “Baby S” before she was named as Maria Skopova during proceedings connected to the inquest.
Four Adults Charged With Murder
Four adults — Andrea Skopova, 20; Peter Horvath, 19; Peter Horvath, 38; and Nina Horvathova, 37 — have been charged with murder in connection with Maria’s dєatᩚh.
They also face charges relating to causing or allowing the dєatᩚh of a child and perverting the course of justice. A 15-year-old girl has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice and cannot be named for legal reasons.
The defendants have not been convicted. The charges remain allegations, and the defendants are entitled to a fair trial.
The trial involving the four adults is scheduled to begin on April 12, 2027, and is expected to last six to seven weeks.
Remembering a Life That Was Far Too Short
As mourners left the cathedral, the image of Maria’s tiny casket remained a powerful reminder of the profound loss at the heart of the case.
Her grandfather’s tears, the quiet prayers and the message left beside her coffin reflected the sorrow of saying goodbye to a child who had so little time in the world.
While the legal process continues, Maria’s family and loved ones must face the painful task of grieving and trying to move forward.
Baby Maria’s life lasted just one day, but her loss has left a lasting mark on those who gathered to remember her. May she rest in peace, and may her loved ones find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
