‘THEY CARRIED SO MUCH PAIN’: BRAY COUPLE LAID TO REST BESIDE THEIR TWO CHILDREN

Biddy O’Brien, 45, and her husband Jamie McGinn, 38, were remembered for their kindness, generosity and enduring love for their children at a joint funeral in Ireland. The couple had endured devastating loss after their two young children died in a fire in 2017.

A community in County Wicklow has said its final goodbye to a husband and wife whose lives were marked by profound grief, as family and friends gathered to remember them at a shared funeral.

Bridget “Biddy” O’Brien, 45, and James “Jamie” McGinn, 38, were found dead at their home in the Cois Cairn estate in Bray on October 21, 2026.

Their joint funeral took place at St Anne’s Church in Shankill on October 27, where mourners heard heartfelt tributes to the couple and the pain they had carried since losing their two young children nearly a decade earlier.

A FAMILY THAT HAD ALREADY ENDURED UNIMAGINABLE LOSS

In March 2017, the couple’s children, Jordan and Holly, died in a devastating apartment fire in Clondalkin, west Dublin.

Biddy survived the blaze but suffered severe burns and spent months receiving medical treatment. Her pregnant cousin, Annmarie O’Brien, and Annmarie’s young daughter, Paris, also died in the fire.

Because of the extent of her injuries, Biddy could not attend her children’s funerals. The priest told mourners that she never fully returned to the person she had been before the tᩚraɢedy and that not having the opportunity to say goodbye had remained a deep source of pain. <

Despite her own suffering, Biddy was remembered for the kindness she continued to show others.

Fr Michael O’Kelly told the congregation that she had found room in her heart to support people who were struggling, even while carrying her own burdens.

Her compassion, he said, would remain an important part of her legacy.

REMEMBERING JAMIE’S GENEROUS SPIRIT

Jamie was remembered as an energetic, sociable and generous man who was willing to help others.

His father, Michael, shared memories of his son’s childhood near the Bray seafront and his interest in understanding how things were made. Jamie enjoyed working with his hands, and his more recent involvement in establishing a roofing business had given him a sense of purpose.

Fr O’Kelly said the work had helped Jamie cope with the loss of his children, although his grief remained profound.

The funeral included several personal tributes reflecting the couple’s lives. A toolbox symbolised Jamie’s love of practical work, while two Bibles represented their faith and a radio recalled their shared enjoyment of listening to music together.

LAID TO REST WITH THEIR BELOVED CHILDREN

Hundreds gathered to pay their respects as the couple’s coffins arrived at St Anne’s Church.

During the service, Fr O’Kelly acknowledged the family’s renewed grief following the deaths of Biddy and Jamie, describing it as another devastating loss after everything they had already endured.

He encouraged those mourning the couple to hold on to the image of Biddy and Jamie reunited with their children.

Following the service, the couple were laid to rest alongside Jordan and Holly at Springfield Cemetery in Bray.

INVESTIGATION INTO THEIR DEATHS

The couple were discovered at their home on October 21, prompting an investigation by Ireland’s Gardaí.

Following post-mortem examinations, investigators ruled out third-party involvement, according to reports published by The Irish Times. A file was being prepared for the coroner, while further findings, including toxicology results, were expected to help clarify the circumstances.

Their funeral was a moment for loved ones to remember more than the tragedies that had shaped their lives: it was also a tribute to their generosity, their bond as parents and the kindness they showed to others.

As family and friends said their final goodbyes, Biddy and Jamie were laid to rest with the two children they had never stopped loving.
