Ecuador is mourning Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a 53-year-old Catholic priest who died on October 17, 2026, after a large crucifix fell on him during a livestreamed Mᴀss at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil.

The sudden incident shocked worshippers attending the service. As the crucifix fell from the wall behind the altar, members of the congregation rushed to help and called for emergency ᴀssistance. The livestream captured the moment, and news of the tᩚraɢedy quickly spread beyond Ecuador.

Father Sánchez was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as the Redemptorists. Throughout his ministry, he served several communities and was remembered by fellow clergy as a calm, approachable priest dedicated to supporting young people, the sick, and families in need.

A memorial Mᴀss was held at the church on October 18. Parishioners and fellow clergy gathered to pray, remember his service, and offer comfort to those grieving his sudden loss.

In his final homily, Father Sánchez spoke about the importance of making time for God and loved ones rather than allowing everyday responsibilities to overshadow meaningful relationships. His message has taken on a poignant significance for many people reflecting on his pᴀssing.

The reason the heavy crucifix came loose has not been publicly established. As the community continues to mourn, Father Sánchez is being remembered not simply for the tragic circumstances of his pᴀssing, but for his years of ministry and the lives he touched.
