Bird Flu Outbreak Spreads Through Utah Mink Farm for Two Months, Raising Fears of a Possible Human Pandemic

A bird flu outbreak has persisted for two months at a Utah mink farm, raising concerns among infectious disease experts about the possibility that the virus could evolve in ways that make it more capable of infecting humans.

The outbreak is occurring at C&T Fenn Farms, a facility that raises thousands of mink for their fur. According to an investigation by ProPublica published by PEOPLE, Utah agriculture officials learned about the outbreak in mid-August after mink began dying from the virus.

Experts are particularly concerned because mink can be susceptible to influenza viruses that affect both animals and humans. As the virus spreads among closely housed animals, it has more opportunities to mutate, potentially creating variants with different characteristics.

Scientists warn that such changes could increase the risk of the virus crossing species. However, there is currently no evidence that this particular outbreak has triggered sustained human-to-human transmission.

Officials face criticism over their response

The investigation found that state and federal authorities struggled to determine how to respond because existing bird flu control programs largely focus on poultry and other regulated livestock.

Unlike poultry farms, mink farms are not covered by the same federal bird flu depopulation and compensation arrangements. As a result, officials did not order the entire herd to be culled, and the outbreak continued.

Public health experts have also questioned why farmworkers were not being actively monitored for symptoms, despite guidance recommending precautions for people exposed to infected animals.

One worker reportedly experienced eye redness, a symptom that can occur in human bird flu infections. The symptom later cleared, and no confirmed infection was reported in connection with that episode.

The farm’s owner, Chad Fenn, described the outbreak as devastating to his business. Meanwhile, Utah officials have faced criticism over the lack of a clear containment plan and concerns about how information was shared between agricultural and public health agencies.

Is there a risk to the public?

Experts say the situation deserves close monitoring because the virus could potentially acquire mutations that make it more capable of infecting people. The circulation of bird flu alongside seasonal human influenza also raises concerns about the possibility of genetic reassortment if a host becomes infected with different flu viruses.

Nevertheless, the reported outbreak has not been linked to additional human cases in Utah, and officials have said they have not detected spread beyond the farm.

The case highlights the challenges authorities face when a dangerous animal disease emerges in a species that falls outside established control programs.

For now, experts are calling for stronger surveillance, closer monitoring of exposed workers and further testing to determine how the virus may be changing as the outbreak continues.
