French Town Hall That Survived Two World Wars Goes Up in Flames During Violent Riots

A historic town hall in France that stood for 143 years and survived two world wars has been left severely damaged after a fire tore through the building during violent protests.

The blaze broke out at Limoges town hall on October 17, 2026, as demonstrations over the cost of living and declining public services escalated into unrest in several French cities. Authorities said masked rioters broke into the landmark and set it on fire.

Flames consumed the roof before the building’s 43-metre clock tower collapsed, evoking memories of the devastating 2019 fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Officials said the town hall’s roof fell onto the floors below, with only the west wing spared from the worst of the damage.

Opened in 1883, the ornate neo-Renaissance building was a major local landmark and had been designated a historic monument. Local officials described the destruction as a catastrophe for France’s architectural heritage.

Limoges Mayor Guillaume Guérin condemned the attack, saying the city’s police had been overwhelmed as hundreds of people reportedly took part in the violence. He called for the historic building to be restored and sought government support comparable to the reconstruction effort following the Notre-Dame fire.

The destruction came amid wider unrest across France. While many people participated in peaceful demonstrations, smaller groups were accused of attacking public buildings, looting businesses and clashing with police.

The fire has left residents grieving the loss of a building that had stood at the heart of their city for generations. Investigators are continuing to examine the arson attack, while authorities face questions about how the landmark was left vulnerable during the unrest.
