SIX YEARS AFTER LOSING HER SON, A MOTHER’S STORY TAKES ANOTHER SAD TURN

Charmaine Lyn George, 52, lived in Pool, near Redruth in Cornwall, and worked as a travel agent. But beyond her professional life, she became known for her dedication to helping people navigate the pain of losing someone they loved.

Her world changed in May 2020, when her son Ewan, just 18, was found dead beneath cliffs at Portreath Beach.

An inquest into Ewan’s dєatᩚh returned an open conclusion because there was insufficient evidence to establish exactly how he died. His dєatᩚh left Charmaine and her family facing profound grief and unanswered questions.

The beach held a particularly painful significance for Charmaine. Reports said she had described the area as Ewan’s “happy place,” a detail that has made the circumstances of her own dєatᩚh especially heartbreaking for those who knew the family.

In the aftermath of Ewan’s dєatᩚh, Charmaine discovered how difficult it could be for bereaved people to find accessible, welcoming support.

Rather than keeping her grief to herself, she began working to create the kind of space she had wanted to find during her own darkest days.

About a year after losing Ewan, she established a grief café in Cornwall, offering people an opportunity to meet, talk and connect with others who understood the experience of loss.

She subsequently worked with The Good Grief Trust, helping launch Good Grief Pop Up Cafés in Cornwall and beyond.

These gatherings gave bereaved people a place to share memories, speak openly about their feelings and find companionship without the pressure of having to explain their grief.

Charmaine’s work demonstrated how a deeply personal loss could inspire practical support for people facing similar experiences.

In 2021, Charmaine received the Caroline Flack mєntal Health Hero Award at The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Awards, recognising her efforts to support bereaved people through her grief café.

The award acknowledged the work she had undertaken following Ewan’s dєatᩚh and her determination to help others find support.

Her contribution extended beyond a single café. Through her work with The Good Grief Trust, she helped make community-based support more accessible to people who might otherwise have faced bereavement alone.

Following her dєatᩚh, the charity paid tribute to her commitment and compassion, expressing its condolences to her daughter, Libby, and the wider family.

For those who benefited from her work, Charmaine was not simply someone who understood grief. She was someone who used that understanding to help others feel less alone.

BODY FOUND AT PORTREATH BEACH

Charmaine was found on the shoreline near Lighthouse Hill at Portreath Beach on October 5, 2026, after a member of the public raised a concern for welfare.

Police attended the scene, but access to the shoreline was difficult, and assistance was requested from HM Coastguard. Rescue teams from Portreath and St Agnes, a St Agnes RNLI lifeboat crew and paramedics also attended.

Charmaine was pronounced dead at the scene, and her next of kin were informed.

Devon and Cornwall Police said her dєatᩚh was not being treated as suspicious.

The location has attracted particular attention because it was the same area where Ewan died six years earlier. However, the location alone does not establish the circumstances or cause of Charmaine’s dєatᩚh.

INQUEST OPENED AS QUESTIONS REMAIN

An inquest into Charmaine’s dєatᩚh opened in Truro on October 22, 2026, before being adjourned.

Assistant Coroner Guy Davies heard that investigations were continuing and that the medical cause of dєatᩚh had not yet been established. A full inquest was expected to take place in 2027.

Until further evidence is considered, no definitive conclusion can be drawn about how Charmaine died.

The ongoing investigation and inquest process are intended to establish the relevant facts. In the meantime, her family and friends are left grieving a woman whose life had been shaped by both personal loss and a remarkable commitment to helping others.

A LEGACY THAT LIVES ON

Charmaine’s dєatᩚh has brought renewed attention to the work she built from her own experience of bereavement.

After losing Ewan, she helped create spaces where people could speak honestly about grief and find companionship during an isolating time. Her efforts received national recognition, but their lasting impact can also be found in the people who found comfort through the cafés she helped establish.

She is survived by her daughter, Libby, and leaves behind family members, friends and members of the bereavement-support community who are now mourning her loss.

For those who knew her story, the tᩚraɢedy is inseparable from the compassion she showed to others. Charmaine spent years helping people navigate the aftermath of losing someone they loved, drawing on her own experience to offer understanding and support.

Her work stands as a reminder that grief can be deeply isolating, and that community, conversation and accessible support can make a meaningful difference.

As her family mourns, Charmaine George’s legacy lives on through the people she helped and the spaces she created for those learning to live with loss.

May Charmaine and Ewan be remembered with love, and may their family find comfort in the support of those around them.
