HEARTBREAKING FIELD TRIP tᩚraɢedy: 10-YEAR-OLD BOY AND HIS 24-YEAR-OLD TEACHER BOTH DROWN AFTER SHE JUMPS INTO WATER TO SAVE HIM

A school field trip turned into an unimaginable tᩚraɢedy when a 10-year-old boy slipped into a reservoir in Iowa and his 24-year-old teacher jumped into the water in a desperate attempt to save him. Both died.

Now, newly released investigative details are shedding light on the final moments of Ahmed Osman and his teacher, Hannah Jorgensen, whose deaths have devastated two families and an entire school community.

The incident happened on September 22, 2026, during a fifth-grade “School of the Wild” field trip to the Macbride Nature Recreation Area near Lake Macbride State Park in Johnson County, Iowa.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Jorgensen had led 14 students on a woodland hike before the group stopped for lunch near the Coralville Reservoir spillway.

During the break, Ahmed stepped into water flowing down the spillway. He slipped on the rocks and fell into the reservoir.

Investigators said Jorgensen immediately entered the water in an attempt to rescue Ahmed. She left her phone on the shore but instructed her students to call 911.

One student used her phone to contact emergency services, while other students alerted a nearby bystander.

The bystander also entered the water in an effort to help rescue the teacher and child. However, the attempt was unsuccessful, and the bystander eventually made it safely back to shore.

The witness remained with the students and spoke with investigators. Authorities also interviewed the children who witnessed the incident.

Jorgensen’s actions have drawn attention to the split-second decision she made when her student fell into the water. She entered the reservoir in an effort to save him, but the rescue attempt ended in tᩚraɢedy.

Emergency responders arrived after receiving a report of two people in the water.

Jorgensen, 24, of Tiffin, Iowa, was recovered at approximately 12:43 p.m. on September 22 and pronounced dead at the scene.

Search teams continued looking for Ahmed throughout the afternoon and evening. The search was suspended overnight before resuming the following morning.

On September 23, authorities recovered Ahmed’s body from the Coralville Reservoir at approximately 1:24 p.m.

He was just 10 years old.

The loss of both the young student and his teacher left the Borlaug Elementary School community grieving two people whose lives had been cut short in the same devastating incident.

NEW QUESTIONS ABOUT FIELD TRIP SUPERVISION

The tᩚraɢedy has also prompted questions about the supervision arrangements for the outing.

In a report published October 26, KCRG said its investigation found that Jorgensen was supervising 14 students on her own, despite University of Iowa School of the Wild program guidelines specifying a ratio of one adult for every 10 students for day trips involving children ages 9 to 14.

The report said the University of Iowa and the Iowa City Community School District had been contacted for comment but had not responded at the time of publication.

The reported discrepancy has raised questions about how supervision was arranged for the field trip. However, the available reporting does not establish that the student-to-adult ratio caused the drowning.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has continued investigating the incident, and the circumstances have left families and the wider community searching for answers.

A FATHER REMEMBERS HIS “LOVELY BOY”

For Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Osman, the loss has been almost impossible to comprehend.

Before the field trip, Mohamed packed cake into his son’s lunchbox. It was an ordinary moment between a father and his child — one that has since become a painful memory.

In an earlier interview, he recalled his son smiling at him as they prepared for the day.

After Ahmed disappeared into the water, his family endured hours of uncertainty while waiting for news. The search continued into the evening before being suspended overnight, leaving them facing a terrible wait until the following day.

When Ahmed’s body was eventually recovered, the family’s hope of bringing him home alive was gone.

Mohamed also spoke with admiration about Jorgensen, recognizing that she had entered the water to try to save his son.

He called the teacher a “hero,” saying she had sacrificed herself in an attempt to rescue Ahmed.

His words reflected the painful complexity of the tᩚraɢedy: a family mourning the loss of a beloved child while also grieving the young teacher who tried to save him.

A SCHOOL COMMUNITY IN MOURNING

The Iowa City Community School District confirmed the deaths of both Jorgensen and Ahmed, describing them as deeply valued members of the school community.

The district expressed condolences to their families, classmates, colleagues and friends. Counseling and additional support services were made available to help students and staff cope with the loss.

The incident has also renewed attention to the importance of water safety, appropriate supervision and emergency preparedness during school outings, particularly near spillways and other areas where currents can be dangerous.

For the students who witnessed the incident, the day that began as an educational adventure became a traumatic experience they may carry with them for years.

TWO LIVES THAT WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN

Hannah Jorgensen was only 24, with a career in teaching ahead of her. Ahmed Osman was just 10, a fifth grader with years of childhood and countless possibilities still before him.

Their deaths have left families facing a grief that words cannot adequately express.

As investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, their loved ones are left with memories of two lives that ended far too soon.

A young boy went on a school trip and never returned home. A teacher entered dangerous water in an attempt to save him, and she never returned either.

Their story is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can change forever — and of the profound loss felt when two lives are taken in a single tragic moment.

May Ahmed and Hannah rest in peace, and may their families, friends and the students who witnessed this tᩚraɢedy find strength and comfort in the days ahead. 🤍🕊️
