SPAIN TRAIN DISASTER: AT LEAST 68 DEAD AFTER HIGH-SPEED TRAIN SLAMS INTO STATIONARY TRAIN

More than 500 passengers were aboard the two trains when the collision near Urda sent carriages off the tracks. Investigators are examining a possible failure in railway safety procedures as the country begins three days of national mourning.

Spain is mourning after a devastating collision between two high-speed trains in the central province of Toledo left at least 68 people dead and dozens more injured.

The 𝔠r𝘢sh happened at approximately 8:53 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, near Urda, along the high-speed railway corridor connecting Madrid with southern Spain.

One train operated by state-owned Renfe struck the rear of an Iryo train that had stopped on the tracks. The impact derailed carriages and sent some of the wreckage down an embankment, leaving passengers trapped inside severely damaged sections of the trains.

A total of 544 passengers were reported to have been aboard the two services: 397 on the Renfe train and 147 on the Iryo train.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene as the scale of the disaster became clear. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics and specialist rescue personnel worked among twisted metal and scattered debris to reach those who needed help.

Regional authorities confirmed at least 68 deaths. Dozens of injured passengers were taken to hospitals, while rescue workers continued searching the wreckage and identifying victims.

Officials warned that the full consequences of the collision were still being assessed.

The collision occurred on a relatively flat stretch of railway between the towns of Mora, Orgaz and Urda in Castilla-La Mancha.

Passengers described a sudden impact that threw luggage and personal belongings around the carriages. Some survivors managed to escape through broken windows, while others waited for emergency personnel to reach them.

Two carriages of the Iryo train were derailed, with wreckage falling down a slope beside the railway line. The most severely damaged areas became the focus of rescue and recovery efforts.

Medical teams transported injured passengers to hospitals across the region. Authorities also worked to contact relatives and establish the identities of those who had died.

The scale of the response reflected the number of people involved and the difficulty of accessing the most damaged carriages.

Investigators are examining how the Renfe train came to collide with the stationary Iryo service.

Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente said a computer-related malfunction had affected a safety system across a stretch of approximately 63 kilometres, automatically bringing trains in the area to a halt.

According to his preliminary account, the Renfe train was subsequently authorised by central control to resume travelling despite a stop signal remaining active. He said the train should not have been allowed to proceed under those circumstances and that, at a minimum, any movement should have been subject to strict speed restrictions.

Investigators are now examining communications, signalling records, train data and other evidence to establish the sequence of events.

These preliminary findings have raised serious questions about operational procedures and the safeguards designed to prevent trains from entering an occupied section of track.

However, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not yet issued a final determination of responsibility, and any question of negligence must be assessed against the evidence collected.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has pledged a thorough investigation and said the government would seek to establish exactly what happened.

SPAIN DECLARES THREE DAYS OF MOURNING

The disaster has prompted an outpouring of condolences across Spain.

Prime Minister Sánchez announced three days of official mourning, beginning Thursday, October 29. Government officials have expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and those injured in the collision.

The tᩚraɢedy has also revived painful memories of another diᩚadℓy railway disaster earlier this year.

In January, a collision near Adamuz in Córdoba killed 46 people. Although both incidents involved high-speed trains, Sánchez said preliminary indications suggested the two accidents were unrelated. Investigators will need to establish the causes of each disaster separately. <

A NATION WAITS FOR ANSWERS

As rescue and recovery operations continue, authorities face the difficult tasks of identifying victims, supporting survivors and helping families receive reliable information about their loved ones.

Rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia were suspended following the collision, disrupting journeys along a major transport corridor.

The investigation will now focus on the technical and operational circumstances that allowed two trains to occupy the same section of track, as well as whether existing safety procedures were followed.

For the families mourning those lost, the immediate priority is grieving and receiving answers. For survivors, the impact of the collision will extend beyond the physical injuries sustained that morning.

Spain is now confronting another major railway tᩚraɢedy, with questions about how it happened and what measures may be needed to prevent a similar disaster in the future.

Authorities have pledged to establish the facts as the investigation continues.
