Mohd Nordin Mohd Othman disappeared while helping load oil palm fruit onto a boat. After an extensive search, villagers made a devastating discovery along the river.
A family’s desperate search for a missing teenager has ended in tᩚraɢedy after the body of 14-year-old Mohd Nordin Mohd Othman was found following a suspected crocodile attack in Sarawak, Malaysia.
The teenager was reported missing on October 26 after a crocodile reportedly seized him while he was helping load oil palm fruit onto a boat at Sungai Plaie Ulu, in the Sebuyau area of Sarawak. His uncle witnessed the incident, according to reports citing local rescue authorities.
A search-and-rescue operation began the following morning, bringing together firefighters, police, other agencies and local residents determined to find the boy.
But after hours of searching, the community received the heartbreaking news that no family should have to face.
A SEARCH THAT ENDED IN tᩚraɢedy
According to Malaysia’s Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, approximately 40 personnel and members of the public took part in the initial search, using four boats to cover the river.
Rescuers first searched an area extending around two kilometres upstream and downstream from where the teenager was reportedly taken. As the search continued, the area was expanded to approximately five kilometres.
The operation was temporarily suspended late that afternoon and was scheduled to resume the next day.
However, a significant development came on the evening of October 27.
A villager returning from a visit to the boy’s family reportedly spotted a crocodile carrying what appeared to be something in its mouth as it moved along the river. The information was passed to other residents, who returned to the area to investigate.
At around 8 p.m., villagers discovered the teenager’s body within the search area, approximately 800 metres from the village jetty, according to local reports.
His grandfather identified him at the scene before police arranged for the body to be transported to Simunjan Hospital for further procedures.
The search-and-rescue operation was officially concluded early on October 28.
FAMILY AND COMMUNITY LEFT GRIEVING
The discovery brought an end to the urgent search but left the teenager’s loved ones facing an unimaginable loss.
Mohd Nordin had reportedly been carrying out a familiar task involving the loading of oil palm fruit when the incident occurred. His uncle was present and witnessed the moment the crocodile seized him, according to authorities cited in local media reports.
The circumstances have also highlighted the dangers faced by people who work or carry out daily activities near rivers in parts of Sarawak, where crocodiles are known to inhabit local waterways.
Authorities coordinated the search across the river and surrounding areas, with villagers also playing an important role in the effort.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The teenager’s remains were taken to Simunjan Hospital following the discovery, while police attended the scene.
Initial reports described injuries consistent with a crocodile attack. Further medical and official procedures will establish the details recorded by the authorities.
For the family, however, the immediate priority is mourning a young life lost far too soon.
What began as a search filled with hope ended in a devastating discovery that has left those close to Mohd Nordin grieving.
