Noah Woods was the boy who loved to be loved, and the inquest still cannot say how he d*ed

The East Anglian Daily Times visited Merriam Close the day after the hearing and reported that the gap between the playground and the Anita Rose Memorial Garden appeared to have been filled with newly installed wooden slats, and that a latch had been added to a gate so it could no longer swing freely. Brantham Parish Council said it remained deeply saddened and that it understood there had been a break in the internal fencing being constructed to separate the play area from the memorial garden, while the whole of the Merriam Close site, including both the play area and the garden, was enclosed by perimeter fencing. That distinction matters to the chronology the court heard. Noah did not have to leave the wider site to reach the path he ran. He pᴀssed an unfinished internal barrier, an open gate, and then a path on the new estate toward the pond. Police have not treated the dєatᩚh as suspicious. The coroner adjourned for a date to be fixed, and the post-mortem cause is still awaiting further investigation. The repairs answer one narrow question about access between the playground and the garden. They do not answer why a three-year-old who would not respond to his name was out of sight after 200 metres, or what happened in the water where he was found the next day among tree roots.

Charlie Peck identified her son at Ipswich Hospital on the evening of 16 September, after paramedics had confirmed dєatᩚh at 4.31pm beside Decoy Pond. The family’s statement, reported by the BBC and the Guardian, asked for Noah to be remembered as happy, cheeky and playful, a child who loved laughing, running and chase, who adored his baby brother and whose bond with that brother was incredibly special. They called him the most affectionate boy, and said he loved to be loved. Peck’s public request to other parents was to hold their children тιԍнтer and cherish every moment. Those lines are the only portrait the inquest itself did not try to replace with a medical finding. Jyoti Gill expressed deepest condolences to family, friends and all affected, then adjourned.

The hearing heard that Noah lived in East Bergholt, that the Brantham outing was routine, and that he was non-verbal, partially deaf and undergoing an autism ᴀssessment. It heard the CCTV window, the fence gap, the open gate, the shout, the loss of sight at about 200 metres, the search, and the recovery five metres from the bank in 1.8 metres of water within submerged roots. It did not hear a concluded cause of dєatᩚh. The Addenbrooke’s post-mortem of 23 September was recorded as requiring further investigation. Online claims of a settled medical cause are not what the inquest record contains. Suffolk Police have been consistent that the dєatᩚh is not suspicious. Football tributes and messages from outside Suffolk followed the discovery, but the court file remains a six-minute opening, an adjournment, and a family that has asked to be left with the child rather than the headline. Until the inquest is resumed, the official position is still the one Gill left in place: a tragic dєatᩚh, a pending medical investigation, and no finding that anyone else was criminally involved.

The timing gap is the part of Noah Woods’s case that the opening inquest made precise and still could not close. Motion-activated CCTV at Merriam Close first showed him at 2.13pm on 15 September and last showed him playing at 2.37pm. He then left through the fence gap into the memorial garden, through an open gate, and along the path toward Decoy Pond, with a relative close behind who lost sight of him after about 200 metres. Police were called after that relative and a nearby man had already begun looking.
