The last words Nolan Wells sent were ordinary, and that is what makes the next thirty-six hours so hard to close

Nolan Xavier Wells was eighteen, a college football player out of Southwest Mississippi Community College, and on the evening of July 3, 2026, he did something his family later described as routine. Around 8:30 p.m. he texted his Auntie Gabby two words: “Thank you.” Civil rights attorney Ben Crump disclosed that message at a press conference after a Jackson County grand jury declined to charge anyone in Wells’ dєatᩚh, and he paired it with a detail the parents had already told investigators. Wells, like a lot of teenagers, barely used ordinary texting with his mother and father. Snapchat and Instagram were where his real conversations lived. The “Thank you” therefore sits in the record less as a farewell than as the last conventional message anyone can point to before a Fourth of July boat trip that ended with his body in the water off Horn Island. The family reported him missing the night of July 4 after a call from one of his friends around 11 p.m. A park ranger found him on July 6, face down near the island’s shore.

Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd said at the time there were no immediate signs of trauma or foul play, and still asked the state medical examiner for a full autopsy because the circumstances were not clear. That gap, between a polite text on Friday night and a body recovered on Monday, is the space every later fight has tried to fill. Friends said Wells traveled with a larger holiday party on three boats, the Triton, the Palm Beach, and the Tideline, then chose to stay on the island after those boats left. One account given early in the search was that he had stayed because he met a girl. The grand jury later accepted the broader version: he remained to socialize with others who were still there, and he was not in a fight or an argument that day. A witness testified under oath that around 3:30 p.m. on July 4 Wells slipped awkwardly off the side of a boat. The witness could not say whether he struck his head. Wells kept socializing and did not appear injured. The Triton, separately, had a bilge-pump and motor failure and was taking on water.

A Sea Tow call circulated online in distorted form. The grand jury found the boat was towed a short distance by the Tideline so water could drain while a pᴀssenger held the motor trim. None of that mechanical trouble, the panel said, rewrote the timeline of Wells’ choice to stay. Horn Island is an unpopulated barrier island about ten miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, a popular holiday anchorage and a bad place to be unaccounted for after dark. The grand jury said the island was thoroughly searched on July 5 and that it was confident the body would have been found that day if it had already been on the island. His phone did not stay with him. It came back to the mainland on a boat he was not on, which investigators and the grand jury both treated as ordinary for a day when people move between boats and leave phones and bags behind.

His mother, Christine Wells Wonsley, later said that when she and her sister opened his Snapchat accounts there was almost nothing from the day, which struck her as unlike a son who filmed everything. That suspicion became its own chapter. The last plain-language text remains the July 3 “Thank you.” Everything after it is Snapchat fragments, GPS, witness memory, and a body found two days later.
