California Boy, 3, Receives Life-Saving Heart Transplant After Months of Waiting

A California family received life-changing news when their young son underwent a heart transplant after spending months battling a serious congenital heart condition.
Jasmine was diagnosed before birth with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare condition in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. The condition makes it difficult for the heart to pump oxygen-rich blood throughout the body and requires complex medical treatment.
Born in 2017, Jasmine underwent her first open-heart surgery when she was just five days old. She later required another operation as doctors worked to manage her condition.
By 2020, her medical team at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles determined that a heart transplant was necessary. Jasmine had spent nearly seven months at the hospital as her family waited for a suitable donor heart.
On November 20, 2020, the long-awaited call finally came. Her mother, Amy, recalled breaking down in tears after learning that a donor heart was available.
The transplant was performed by a team of surgeons, nurses, cardiologists and other specialists at the hospital’s Heart Institute. The procedure gave Jasmine a chance to continue growing and developing despite the serious condition she had faced since before birth.
Her case also highlights the challenges confronting children born with complex heart defects. Some require multiple surgeries early in life, while others may eventually need a transplant when previous treatments are no longer sufficient.

For Jasmine and her family, the transplant marked a major turning point after years of uncertainty and intensive medical care.
Her story underscores the importance of organ donation and the specialized teams that care for children with life-threatening heart conditions.
