Great White Shark Suddenly Lunges at Woman Who Reaches Out to Touch It Off Georgia Coast

A woman’s extraordinary encounter with a great white shark took a frightening turn when the massive predator suddenly whipped around and lunged toward her as she reached out to touch it.

The startling moment was captured on video off the coast of Tybee Island, Georgia, during a shark-tagging trip involving the Knot Lucky White Shark Tagging Program.

The woman, identified only as Jen in reports, is a veteran who was taking part in an outing organized by the group. Footage shows her reaching toward the shark while it was alongside the boat, before the animal abruptly turned its head in her direction.

The sudden movement startled the people aboard the vessel and offered a dramatic reminder of how quickly a seemingly calm encounter with a wild animal can change.

Crew Says Woman Was Never in Immediate Danger

Jimmy Lee Armel, who shared the footage online, explained that the crew maintained control of the situation throughout the encounter.

According to Armel, Jen was never in immediate danger because the team had the shark under control and it did not get close enough to injure her.

The group works with research partners to catch, study, tag and release sharks, helping scientists learn more about their movements and migration patterns.

Despite the close encounter, the shark was not tagged during this trip. Armel said the team would not force the procedure when doing so could put either the crew or the animal at risk.

A Reminder About the Power of Great White Sharks

Great white sharks are powerful marine predators, and even experienced people working around them must exercise caution. Their sudden movements can be difficult to predict, particularly during close-contact research activities.

The program also honors fallen service members by naming sharks after them, connecting its scientific work with a mission to remember those who died serving their country.

The video has attracted attention online because of the dramatic change from a quiet moment of contact to the shark’s sudden lunge.

Although the crew said the woman was safe throughout the incident, the encounter highlights why touching wild sharks can be dangerous and why trained professionals must prioritize safety during research operations.
