The Daughter Who Was Never Lost
“Take that necklace off,” Richard demanded, his trembling voice silencing the ballroom.
Emily stepped backward.
“Sir, it’s all I have left of my mother.”
Richard approached slowly.
“Turn it over. Please.”
Confused, Emily removed the necklace and revealed a tiny engraving on the back.
Forever my little star. Dad.
Richard covered his mouth.
“I had those words engraved twenty-five years ago,” he whispered.
Vanessa suddenly stepped between them.
“Father, she’s obviously trying to steal our money!”
But Richard wasn’t listening.
“What was your mother’s name?”
“Elizabeth Carter,” Emily answered.
Richard staggered.
His daughter Elizabeth had disappeared after refusing an arranged marriage. For years, he searched for her.
Then, eighteen years ago, a woman had arrived claiming to be Elizabeth’s daughter, carrying documents that appeared to prove her identity.
That woman was Vanessa.
Richard slowly turned toward her.
“You told me Elizabeth died before you could remember her.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“She did!”
“Then why does this girl have Elizabeth’s necklace?”
Before Vanessa could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
Samuel Carter entered, his weathered cowboy hat held tightly against his chest.
He looked at Richard.
“Elizabeth made me promise never to bring Emily here,” Samuel said quietly. “She was afraid of the people who destroyed her life.”
Richard’s eyes filled with tears.
“Where is my daughter?”
Samuel lowered his head.
“She died protecting Emily.”
Then he pulled a yellowed envelope from his jacket.
“Before she died, Elizabeth wrote down everything. Including who stole her identity.”
Vanessa lunged toward the envelope.
“DON’T LET HIM OPEN THAT!”
Richard caught her wrist.
And for the first time in eighteen years, he looked at Vanessa not as his granddaughter—but as a stranger.
Samuel opened the letter.
The first sentence made Richard’s blood run cold.
“Father, the woman living in your house is not my daughter. She is the daughter of the woman who tried to 𝘬iᩚll me.”
