A tᩚraɢedy AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK: THE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S FINAL DAYS

The dєatᩚh of William Chapman at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has left a grieving family searching for answers, while newly reported details about his mєntal health history have brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding the tᩚraɢedy. What began as a fatal incident involving an Amur tiger has now developed into a wider investigation involving the coroner, health services and local authorities. At the heart of the case is a young man whose family says he struggled with significant mєntal illness, and whose final months may receive closer scrutiny as investigators work to establish a clearer picture of what happened.

Chapman, who was 24 according to reports from the opening of the inquest, died on October 10, 2026, after entering the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. The animal involved was an Amur tiger named Altai. At the opening of the inquest on October 15, Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard that Chapman had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced previous episodes of psychosis. He had been receiving support from adult mєntal health services in Doncaster, although he was also described in the hearing as highly functioning and independent, with no formal care requirements. These details have prompted questions from his family about the support he received before his dєatᩚh, but they do not establish that any shortcomings in care contributed to the incident.

According to evidence presented at the preliminary hearing, Chapman entered the enclosure after climbing over two fences. He sustained multiple traumatic injuries during the encounter with the tiger, and an initial post-mortem examination recorded those injuries as the cause of dєatᩚh. Emergency services attended, but he was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the scene. South Yorkshire Police began investigating the circumstances, while the City of Doncaster Council initiated a health-and-safety investigation in its capacity as the park’s licensing authority. The coroner also requested that relevant CCTV footage be preserved, an important step in ensuring that investigators can examine the available evidence rather than rely on incomplete accounts of the incident.

The questions surrounding Chapman’s mєntal health care form a separate but significant part of the unfolding case. His family has raised concerns about his contact with services operated by the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, commonly known as RDaSH. The trust has confirmed that an independent patient safety incident investigation is underway and that the family will be supported in participating in the process. At this stage, neither the family’s concerns nor the existence of an investigation should be interpreted as proof of negligence. Establishing whether the care provided was appropriate will require examination of the relevant records, decisions and circumstances.

The case has also generated concern about the treatment of the tᩚraɢedy on social media. Chapman’s family has spoken publicly about the distress caused by the circulation of deeply offensive material relating to his dєatᩚh. Their appeal for respect highlights another dimension of the story: the suffering of relatives who must grieve while private and painful circumstances become the subject of widespread public attention. Meanwhile, Yorkshire Wildlife Park has confirmed that Altai will not be euthanised as a result of the incident. The park reopened on October 16 after a temporary closure, while investigations continued.

A full inquest is scheduled for March 18, 2027. That hearing is expected to provide a more detailed examination of the circumstances surrounding Chapman’s dєatᩚh. Until then, important questions remain unresolved, including the precise sequence of events at the enclosure and the concerns raised about his contact with mєntal health services. For his family, the central issue is not simply how the tᩚraɢedy occurred, but whether a fuller understanding of his final months can emerge from the investigations. Their search for answers continues, and any conclusions must ultimately be grounded in the evidence presented to the appropriate authorities.
