It started with a dropped call and a lie about making peace, and the country never stopped retelling it

The Knoxville case that put Christa Pike on dєatᩚh row has been retold for thirty years because it arrived already shaped as a story: a jealousy triangle, a false offer of peace, a dormitory sign-out log, and a defendant who called herself “Lil Devil.” On January 12, 1995, 18-year-old Pike believed Colleen Slemmer was trying to take her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp. Prosecutors said Pike, Shipp, and Shadolla Peterson drew Slemmer away under a pretext. Slemmer’s body was found the next morning. Investigators moved quickly, using sign-out records and witness accounts.

Pike was convicted in 1996 and sentenced to dєatᩚh at 20. She has remained Tennessee’s only female dєatᩚh-row prisoner, held in isolation, while appeals focused on her age at the time of the crime, childhood trauma, and brain development. The September 30, 2026, exє𝔠uti☉n attempt did not close that file. It reopened the oldest version of it. Outlets again led with the occult detail, the boyfriend, the cruelty of the attack, and the fact that a woman was about to be executed. The dropped-call beginning and the lie about making peace are the parts that keep the retelling alive, because they make the crime feel like a plot rather than a file. What the new reporting adds is an ending the plot did not have. After two syringes, Pike was still alive. The protocol was silent. The governor halted the next date and ordered a review. The original investigation had closed its evidence in about 36 hours. The appeals have lasted longer than Colleen Slemmer lived. That contrast is now the story’s second half: a case that was simple enough to charge in a day and a half, and complicated enough that three decades later the state could not finish the sentence it imposed.

Tennessee’s lєthaℓ-inje𝔠ti☉n protocol is built around a single drug, pentobarbital, and a narrow branch. Officials prepare one set of syringes and keep enough of the drug on hand for a second set. After the first dose there is a waiting period with the blinds closed. If the inmate is not ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, the second set is given. Reporters and defense lawyers say that is where the page stops. On September 30, witnesses described Pike talking and, by some accounts, singing after the first attempt, then asking about a burning, throbbing spot in her arm. A second round was administered around 8:30 p.m. Snoring continued. The microphone was cut near 8:53 p.m. Media were asked to leave. Lawyers said she still had a heartbeat. She was moved to a hospital. Her legal team had warned of difficult veins, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, and no real emergency care if the procedure went wrong, all under a protocol kept largely secret. The Department of Correction answered that the approved steps were followed. Both statements can be true, and that is the problem the review has to name. A protocol that exhausts itself while the prisoner is alive is not a protocol for an exє𝔠uti☉n. It is a protocol for an attempt.

dєatᩚh-penalty experts called the failure unparalleled in the state’s recent use of the single-drug method. Lee’s decision to cancel another 2026 date and bring in an outside review freezes the calendar while the state decides whether the drug, the veins, the training, or the missing final instruction was the break. Until that review lands, every future warrant in Tennessee will be read against a night when the second syringe was given, the curtain stayed closed, and the person on the gurney was still snoring.
