When Ashlyn Outlaw discovered that her unborn son might have serious health complications, the excitement of becoming a first-time mother was replaced by months of uncertainty, fear and unanswered questions.

Her little boy, Myles Weston Ray Outlaw, was eventually diagnosed with VACTERL association, a rare condition involving multiple birth defects that can affect different parts of the body.

Myles was born on July 6, with four features associated with the condition: vertebral abnormalities, anal atresia, kidney abnormalities and limb differences.

But behind his medical diagnosis was another deeply personal story โ€” a mother learning to navigate grief, fear and expectations while discovering the extraordinary strength of her own child.

The familyโ€™s difficult journey began around Ashlynโ€™s 20-week pregnancy scan, when doctors struggled to obtain clear images of the babyโ€™s heart and right kidney. Further examinations revealed additional concerns, including a single umbilical artery and a cyst.

An amniocentesis test came back normal, and subsequent heart examinations were reassuring. However, a fetal MRI revealed more complications.

At 36 weeks, Ashlyn and her husband finally received a fuller picture of their sonโ€™s condition. Myles had a fused kidney, an imperforate anus, and significant limb differences. His legs were shorter because of missing bones, his feet were clubbed, and his forearms and several digits were absent.

After months of appointments and worrying conversations, the couple faced the reality that their babyโ€™s life might look very different from what they had imagined.

โ€œWhen I think about Mylesโ€™ birth, it brings back so much heartache when it should have been the happiest day of my life,โ€ Ashlyn recalled.

She remembered anxiously asking her husband whether their son was okay and whether his arms and legs were there. When she later saw a photograph showing his full body, the reality of his condition left her overwhelmed.

Myles spent approximately four weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). During that time, the family underwent genetic testing, which did not identify a genetic cause for his condition, and doctors officially diagnosed him with VACTERL association.

Leaving the hospital brought relief, but it also meant entering a new chapter filled with medical appointments, colostomy care and uncertainty about what lay ahead.

For Ashlyn, the emotional burden became particularly difficult after they returned home. She struggled with depression, withdrew from social situations and found it painful to see other families experiencing the kind of pregnancy and early parenthood she had once imagined.

โ€œI would find myself looking for babies that looked like him,โ€ she shared, describing the loneliness of feeling that her family was different from everyone around them.

She loved her son, but she was also grieving the future she had pictured for him. And she was learning that both feelings could exist at the same time.

Through those difficult months, her husband became a steady source of encouragement, helping the family take small steps forward when everything felt overwhelming.

Then, little by little, Myles began to change the way his mother saw their lives.

He grew, developed his own personality and began exploring the world around him, using his hands and feet in ways that surprised and delighted his parents. His smile became one of his most beautiful qualities, captivating the people who met him.

Myles also underwent surgeries to address his clubbed foot and correct his anal atresia, taking important steps in his ongoing medical journey.

As Ashlyn watched her son grow more determined and make progress in his own time, her perspective began to shift.

Instead of focusing only on the challenges he might face, she started seeing the possibilities ahead of him.

โ€œSlowly, Myles showed me that he loved his life and he loved us,โ€ she explained.

That realization became a turning point. Ashlyn recognized that while she could care for her son physically, she also wanted to be emotionally present for the moments that made his childhood special.

She began working toward accepting the life her family had been given, rather than measuring it against the future she had once expected.

โ€œI donโ€™t have all the answers, but I know I need to show up every day,โ€ she said. โ€œMyles has shown me so much strength and love that surpasses any expectations.โ€

Today, Ashlyn sees her sonโ€™s story not simply through the lens of his diagnosis, but through the personality, determination and potential that make him who he is.

She knows there will be challenges ahead, but she also looks forward to discovering all the things Myles will accomplish in his own time.

And for other parents facing unexpected diagnoses, she hopes her experience offers reassurance that fear, disappointment and uncertainty do not make them any less loving.

โ€œOf course, naturally, I would want things to be different,โ€ she reflected. โ€œBut Myles is exactly who he is supposed to be. I honestly cannot picture him any other way.โ€

Her journey has not been about finding every answer or pretending the difficult days never happened. It has been about learning to embrace her son as he is, celebrating his progress and choosing to be present for the life they are building together.

For Ashlyn, the greatest lesson has come from the little boy who changed her world before she even had the chance to hold him.

โ€œI know in this life, my purpose is to be Mylesโ€™ mom so he can live out his purpose and his โ€˜why.’โ€
