“SHE’S STILL HERE, BUT WE CAN SEE HER SLIPPING AWAY” — MARTIN FRIZELL SHARES HEARTBREAKING UPDATE ON WIFE FIONA PHILLIPS’ ALZHEIMER’S BATTLE

The former GMTV presenter’s husband has spoken emotionally about the devastating impact of early-onset Alzheimer’s, revealing how the progressive illness is changing their family life and affecting the woman he has loved for decades.

Martin Frizell has shared an emotional update about his wife, former television presenter Fiona Phillips, as she continues to live with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

The television producer, who has been married to Fiona since 1997, has spoken openly about the difficult reality of watching someone he loves experience the effects of a progressive condition that gradually changes memory, thinking and everyday life.

Fiona, 65, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s after initially believing that symptoms including anxiety and brain fog were connected to menopause.

She publicly revealed her diagnosis in 2023, sharing the deeply personal news with the public after years of working in British television.

Now, Martin has admitted that the disease has brought increasingly painful changes for the entire family.

During an emotional appearance on ITV’s Lorraine in February 2026, Martin described how Fiona’s condition had progressed.

He revealed that she no longer remembered important occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Christmas and New Year.

“It’s wretched; not just for her but for the family as well,” he said.

He continued: “She’s still there, but day by day, we can see it slipping away.”

Martin recalled how Fiona had once been a dynamic, bubbly woman who took great pride in her appearance and professional life.

Watching those familiar aspects of her personality and independence become increasingly affected by the illness has been particularly difficult.

However, he was also careful to emphasize that Fiona remains very much present and continues to show the personality her loved ones recognize.

“I don’t want to give the impression she’s some sort of basket case as she’s very much with us,” he explained.

He affectionately described her as still being “the world’s most stubborn woman.”

For many British viewers, Fiona Phillips was once a familiar presence in their homes every morning.

She became one of the country’s best-known breakfast television presenters through her work on GMTV, where she spent 15 years presenting alongside several well-known broadcasters.

Her warmth, confidence and lively personality made her a recognizable face to millions of viewers.

But away from the cameras, Fiona had also experienced Alzheimer’s through her own family.

Both of her parents were diagnosed with the condition, and she had previously spoken about the fear of potentially developing the same illness.

When she began experiencing anxiety, exhaustion and problems with concentration, she initially thought they might be symptoms of menopause.

The eventual diagnosis was a devastating shock.

MARTIN STEPPED AWAY FROM TELEVISION TO SUPPORT HIS WIFE

Martin and Fiona have been together for decades and share two sons, Nathaniel and Mackenzie.

Martin previously stepped down from his position as editor of ITV’s This Morning in December 2024, explaining that he expected his family priorities to change in 2026.

His decision allowed him to spend more time supporting Fiona and helping their family navigate the challenges of her diagnosis.

He has also spoken candidly about the emotional pressure of being a caregiver.

During his television appearance, Martin admitted that he had sometimes struggled with his own mєntal health and had to be careful not to slip into depression.

Returning to broadcasting and podcasting had given him some respite, although he also acknowledged feeling guilty whenever work took him away from his wife.

His comments revealed the difficult balance many families face when caring for someone with dementia: trying to maintain their own lives while remaining present for the person they love.

MUSIC STILL BRINGS MOMENTS OF CONNECTION

Despite the challenges, Martin has shared that Fiona continues to enjoy moments of familiarity and happiness.

Music has remained particularly meaningful in their household.

He revealed that they often play songs by Rod Stewart, whom Fiona had interviewed during her career as a journalist.

The singer had even given her the affectionate nickname “Doris.”

Martin’s stories have offered a glimpse into the small moments that continue to bring joy to their family, even as the illness progresses.

He has also helped Fiona document her experience in her memoir, Remember When: My Life With Alzheimer’s, allowing her to share her story and raise awareness about the condition.

A HUSBAND’S CALL FOR GREATER SUPPORT AND RESEARCH

Martin has repeatedly called for greater investment in Alzheimer’s research and better support for families affected by dementia.

He has questioned why the disease does not receive the level of attention and funding he believes it deserves, particularly given its devastating impact on patients and their loved ones.

Fiona’s experience has also highlighted the challenges of receiving an early diagnosis and navigating a condition that can affect people long before old age.

Although there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, researchers continue to investigate treatments that may help slow its progression and improve quality of life.

For Martin and Fiona’s family, every day brings its own challenges.

But through his public appearances and Fiona’s memoir, Martin has continued to remind people that she is more than her diagnosis.

She is still his wife, the mother of their children and the woman he has shared nearly three decades of life with.

And as he continues to stand beside her, his message has helped bring attention to the emotional reality faced by countless families living with Alzheimer’s.
