THE TWINS WHO WERE ONCE JOINED AT THE HEAD — NOW THEY CAN FINALLY LOOK AT EACH OTHER

Arthur and Bernardo Lima were born in Roraima, northern Brazil, joined at the crown of their heads. The boys shared part of their brain and a major vein carrying blood back to the heart — making their condition one of the rarest and most challenging forms of conjoined twinning.

For more than two years, their family could only watch and hope. Arthur and Bernardo lived on a specially designed bed, while other medical centres had told their parents, Adriely and Antonio Lima, that separating the brothers was impossible.

But their parents refused to stop believing in them.

The family eventually travelled to Rio de Janeiro, where a team led by neurosurgeon Gabriel Mufarrej worked with specialists from Gemini Untwined and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Before the first operation, surgeons in Brazil and London used virtual reality headsets to study detailed 3D maps of the boys’ shared skull and brain. They rehearsed the incredibly complex procedure together, planning every possible step before entering the operating room.

The separation was carried out through a series of lengthy operations, gradually changing the boys’ shared blood circulation so that each could eventually have their own.

The final procedure lasted around 27 hours, involving a team of nearly 100 medical professionals.

And then came the moment their family had waited years to see.

Arthur and Bernardo were finally separated.

For the first time in their lives, the brothers could look directly at each other’s faces.

Their journey was far from over. Rehabilitation followed, with the boys slowly learning to adapt to their new lives. By Christmas, they were finally back home in Roraima.

“I still cried every day when I saw them both in the room,” their mother, Adriely, shared, describing the overwhelming feeling of finally seeing her sons together as two separate children.

“We spent years hoping for this moment. Watching them smile and grow side by side makes every difficult day worth it.”
