DOCTOR WHO OVERSAW CHRISTa PIKE’S FAILED exє𝔠uti☉n SAYS HE STILL BELIEVES SHE SHOULD FACE THE dєatᩚh PENALTY

Dr. Mark Fowler has defended his position following Tennessee’s failed exє𝔠uti☉n attempt, as Pike describes the lasting physical and emotional effects of the September procedure.

The doctor involved in Tennessee’s failed exє𝔠uti☉n attempt involving Christa Pike says he still believes her dєatᩚh sentence should be carried out — a position that has renewed controversy surrounding the case.

Có thể là hình ảnh về văn bảnDr. Mark Fowler, the physician assigned to pronounce Pike dead during the September 30 procedure, discussed what happened during the attempt and defended his views in an interview reported by PEOPLE.

Pike, 50, survived after receiving two doses of pentobarbital. Fowler said he was called into the exє𝔠uti☉n chamber after it became clear that she had not died. He later diagnosed her as comatose and helped arrange emergency medical care after officials halted the procedure.

Investigators subsequently found that improperly placed IV lines had caused the drugs to enter tissue in Pike’s arms rather than properly circulating through her bloodstream.

Fowler acknowledged that the procedure should have been stopped and reassessed when Pike complained of pain in her arm. However, he said he continued to believe that her sentence should ultimately be carried out, partly because he believes justice is owed to the family of her victim, Colleen Slemmer.

He also defended his professional judgment and argued that Tennessee should reconsider its lєthaℓ-inje𝔠ti☉n protocol, expressing a preference for an older three-drug combination.

April 12, 2012; Nashville, TN, USA; Christa Gail Pike, on death row for a slaying, appears in court Thursday to fight a conviction in a 2001 attack on an inmate. Pike describes ongoing pain

In her first public statement following the failed exє𝔠uti☉n, Pike described what she says has been a continuing struggle.

She reported pain in her body, arms, hands and throat, along with difficulty speaking. She also described the emotional impact of surviving an experience she had not expected to live through.

“There hasn’t been a moment since that night when I haven’t been in pain,” she said.

Pike also expressed concern for Slemmer’s family, acknowledging the suffering and loss they have endured.

Her attorneys have raised questions about the exє𝔠uti☉n procedure and its consequences, while seeking further legal relief.

What happens next?

Pike was convicted in the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Job Corps student. She was sentenced to dєatᩚh in 1996.

Her sentence remains in place. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has suspended executions through the end of 2026 while an independent review examines what went wrong during the September procedure. No new exє𝔠uti☉n date for Pike has been announced.

The case continues to draw attention to the state’s exє𝔠uti☉n practices, the medical questions surrounding the failed procedure and the continuing legal status of Pike’s sentence.

For now, the independent review and Pike’s legal proceedings remain central to what happens next.
