BROOKLYN JOGGER KATIE SUAREZ, 28, LEFT CRITICALLY INJURED AFTER BRUTAL STABBING — FATHER FOUND HER ON RUNNING PATH
The young bank employee had spoken to her parents just minutes before the attack. Police are now appealing for witnesses as the investigation continues.
A 28-year-old woman was left critically injured after being stabbed multiple times in the neck while jogging along a waterfront path in Brooklyn, New York.
Katie Suarez was running along the Shore Parkway Greenway in the Bath Beach neighborhood shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30, when she was attacked.
According to police, the assault happened near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue, along the bike path beside the Belt Parkway.
Emergency medical personnel rushed Suarez to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where she was reported to be in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition.
Reports from The New York Post, citing sources familiar with the case, later said Suarez had been declared brain-dead and remained on life support. However, police and other news outlets have continued to describe her condition as ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal, and no official public confirmation of her dєatᩚh had been announced in the reports reviewed.
She spoke to her parents just minutes before the attack
In the hours before the incident, Suarez had reportedly finished work at a local bank and changed into her running clothes.
Her parents were expecting to meet her after her run. According to reports, her father spoke with her by phone at around 8 p.m.
During the conversation, Suarez reportedly told him she was approximately half a mile away — just a short distance from where they planned to meet.
When she failed to arrive and stopped answering calls, her parents became worried and began looking for her.
Her father eventually found her injured near the waterfront path and sought help.
Sources told The New York Post that Suarez had suffered two stab wounds to the neck. She reportedly managed to move a short distance after the attack before collapsing.
Police search for the attacker
The NYPD is continuing to investigate the stabbing and has appealed to the public for information.
As of the latest reports, no suspect had been publicly identified and no arrest had been announced. Investigators have also not officially established a motive.
Some reports citing law-enforcement sources suggested the attack may have been random, but police have not confirmed that conclusion.
Authorities are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was near the eastbound bike path along the Belt Parkway, between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street, between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. on October 30.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip through NYPD channels.
Remembered as a kind and family-oriented woman
Suarez worked as a bank teller and had reportedly been training for the New York City Marathon.
Neighbors described her as kind, respectful and soft-spoken, expressing shock and sadness over what happened.
The attack has also raised concerns among people who regularly use the waterfront path for running, walking and cycling.
For her family, the evening began with an ordinary plan to meet after work. It ended with a desperate search for their daughter and a devastating wait at the hospital.
As investigators work to establish what happened, police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the attack or noticed anything unusual in the area to come forward.
