DIY SOS PETITION SURGES PAST 53,000 SIGNATURES AS FANS FIGHT TO SAVE BELOVED BBC SHOW

The campaign to protect the long-running renovation programme has gained fresh momentum, as presenter Nick Knowles admits he doubts it will ever return in the format viewers know and love.

A growing campaign to save BBC favourite DIY SOS has passed 53,000 signatures, as thousands of viewers and former volunteers urge the broadcaster to reconsider its decision to put the much-loved programme on hold.

The Change.org petition, launched by plasterer David Claydon on October 18, had attracted more than 53,800 verified signatures by November 2.

The campaign began after the BBC announced that the main series would be rested in 2027 because of financial pressures.

For many supporters, DIY SOS has always been about much more than home renovations. Since its launch in 1999, the programme has brought together tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers to transform homes and community spaces for families facing serious illness, disability, bereavement and other difficult circumstances.

David Claydon, who took part in a DIY SOS project in 2025, started the petition to highlight the programme’s impact on families and communities.

His appeal describes the show as a source of hope for people experiencing some of the hardest moments of their lives.

It praises the tradespeople who give their time, skills and resources to help families receive a fresh start.

The petition calls on the BBC to reconsider its plans and preserve the programme’s community-focused work.

Supporters have also shared personal stories explaining why the show matters to them, including accounts from volunteers who have travelled long distances to take part in builds.

Presenter Nick Knowles has also addressed the programme’s uncertain future.

In an emotional message following the final episode of the latest series on October 27, the 64-year-old described the decision as “the end of an era”.

He said he had been told that, if the programme returned, it would have to be smaller and more cost-effective.

However, Nick questioned whether the large-scale transformations that made the show famous could ever be delivered in a reduced format.

“If you have ever been on DIY SOS – and there are 26,000 of you out there who have – you will know you can’t do that smaller. It is what it is,” he said.

He thanked the volunteers, tradespeople, suppliers, families and viewers who had supported the programme throughout its 27-year run.

Nick also admitted that, although he has more television projects ahead, he does not believe anything else will quite match the experience of DIY SOS. <Cite refs={[“turn742209search5″,”turn742209search7″,”turn742209news12”]}/>

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO DIY SOS?

The BBC has confirmed that the familiar version of DIY SOS will be rested in 2027 as part of its efforts to reduce costs.

However, the broadcaster has stressed that the brand is not disappearing altogether.

A new spin-off, titled DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life, is planned for 2027. Produced by South Shore, it will revisit families and projects featured in previous episodes rather than focus on the large-scale new builds audiences have come to expect.

The BBC described the spin-off as a more cost-effective way to continue the brand.

The decision comes as the corporation works towards saving £500 million over three years. <Cite refs={[“turn742209search4″,”turn742209search1”]}/>

WILL THE PETITION MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

With more than 53,000 verified signatures, the campaign shows the strength of feeling among viewers and people who have been involved in the programme.

But there has been no announcement that the BBC will reverse its decision.

For supporters, the concern is not simply losing a television programme. They fear losing a platform that has brought communities together and helped families facing extraordinary challenges.

As the petition continues to grow, fans are hoping their voices will be heard.

Whether the campaign can change the BBC’s plans remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: after 27 years, DIY SOS has left a lasting mark on the people it has helped.
