A devastating accident during a school field trip in Iowa has claimed the lives of a young elementary teacher and one of her students. On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen and 10-year-old Ahmed Osman entered the water at Lake Macbride State Park and did not survive. Their bodies were later recovered from the Coralville Reservoir near the park’s spillway.
Jorgensen taught fifth grade at Borlaug Elementary School, part of the Iowa City Community School District in the Coralville area. Osman was a fifth-grade student at the same school. That day, a group of fifth-graders was taking part in the University of Iowa’s “School of the Wild” outdoor education program at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area. The program is designed to give elementary and middle-school students hands-on learning experiences in natural settings.
Shortly after noon, emergency dispatchers received reports of people in the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway. Deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly, and a large-scale search-and-rescue operation was launched.
