JUST MONTHS AFTER SAYING GOODBYE TO JUNE, THE CASH FAMILY RETURNED TO THE SAME CHURCH TO MOURN JOHNNY — AND ROSANNE’S WORDS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION

In May 2003, Johnny Cash sat in a wheelchair as he said goodbye to his beloved wife, June Carter Cash. Less than four months later, his family and friends returned to the same Tennessee church to honor the man whose unmistakable voice had become part of American music history.

Johnny Cash pᴀssed away on September 12, 2003, at the age of 71. Three days later, more than 1,000 mourners gathered at First Baptist Church in Hendersonville to remember the legendary performer known around the world as the Man in Black.

Among those attending were Kris Kristofferson, George Jones, Vince Gill and other musicians who had shared friendships and unforgettable moments with Cash throughout his remarkable career.

The service reflected both his musical legacy and his humble beginnings. A wreath placed on his casket featured cotton, corn and turnip plants, recalling the Arkansas farmland where his family had once worked. It was a simple but meaningful tribute to the roots that remained part of his story despite decades of fame.

Music, naturally, played a central role. Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow performed “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Every Grain of Sand,” bringing a sense of reflection to the gathering. A film celebrating Cash’s life also allowed mourners to hear his unmistakable voice once more.

But one of the most personal moments came from his daughter, Rosanne Cash.

She had heard people say they could not imagine a world without Johnny Cash. Her response captured the difference between losing a cultural icon and losing a parent: “I cannot begin to imagine a world without Daddy.”

Those words carried even greater meaning because music had remained a powerful connection between father and daughter. Earlier in 2003, Rosanne released “September When It Comes,” a duet recorded with Johnny. The song explored the pᴀssage of time and the awareness that life’s seasons inevitably change.

Knowing what happened later that year gave the recording an added emotional weight. What might once have sounded like a reflection on aging became a lasting musical connection between a father and daughter.

Johnny Cash left behind a catalogue of songs that continue to reach new generations. Yet for Rosanne and the family gathered that September day, his greatest legacy was not simply the music heard around the world. It was the father, husband and friend they had loved.

Which Johnny Cash song brings back the strongest memories of your younger days?
